About the Role

The Disability Adviser role is a key element of our support for students with a disability at SOAS. The role holder gives advice and guidance to disabled students as well as setting up support and reasonable adjustments for them during their studies. They form part of our wider disability support provision through our Disability & Neurodiversity team, which also comprises of our learning advisers, disability caseworker and disability administration team. The role works predominantly with students 1:1 and works with other members of the team to ensure that students with a disability are supported as best possible during their time here at SOAS.

About the Department

The Student Advice & Wellbeing department sits within the Student Academic Services directorate. The team are comprised of specialists across various areas and is where our Disability & Neurodiversity team are based. Student Advice & Wellbeing are often the first port of call for students in need of mental health support, disability support, immigration & finance advice, accommodation allocation and multi-faith support.

About you

You will need to demonstrate:

  • A good working knowledge of disability issues, including the legal framework and sector requirements.
  • Knowledge of the UK higher education system, Institutional contexts and student experience including the government changes around DSA, and the drive for inclusive practice.
  • Experience of assessing disabled students' needs, specifically in terms of reasonable adjustments, plans for support and advising on anticipatory adjustments and inclusive practice.
  • Well-developed one-to-one interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to prepare and deliver clear and informed presentations and/or workshops to both small and medium sized groups.
