About the programme

Join an exciting aviation engineering environment dedicated to supporting helicopter emergency services. On this programme, you'll train to become a fully licensed engineer, responsible for the airworthiness of critical air ambulances that help the public when they're most in need.

During the first year, you'll embark on a 9-month residential course at Kemble Airfield, Gloucestershire, studying towards CAA Part 66 CAT A Modules. This will include both theoretical and practical training. The remaining time will be spent at our facility at Gloucestershire Airport. You'll be involved in a variety of tasks, including maintenance inspections, component changes, engine module reassemblies, sheet metal work, and avionics maintenance and repairs. Additionally, you'll handle administration tasks associated with aircraft maintenance.

Your education/training

In addition to on-the-job experience, you'll receive formal training both at Kemble Airfield and Babcock's Onshore facilities. You'll work towards completing the CAA Part 66 CAT A Modules through LRTT, laying the foundation for a career as a licensed rotary-wing aircraft engineer.

Future prospects

Upon successful completion of your apprenticeship, you'll be eligible to apply for your CAA B Licence, qualifying you as a fully licensed engineer on rotary-wing aircraft. You may also have the opportunity to undertake higher-level qualifications to further your career within Babcock across a variety of roles and functions.

What you'll need

  • A minimum of four GCSEs (A-C) or (4-9) or equivalent including English, Maths, and a Science subject.
  • Studying for, awaiting results or have passed A-Levels, BTEC, NVQ Level 3 or similar in a STEM subject.
  • To live or permanently relocate within 45 minutes of Gloucestershire Airport (GL51 6SP) for the 5-year duration of the apprenticeship.
  • A passion for aviation and engineering is a must, and any experience with mechanical or electrical equipment would be an advantage.
  • You must hold a valid passport to be able to travel unrestricted across our network and successfully pass a CRB check.
  • Many of our early careers roles are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions which mean that your place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency you hold or have held may impact which roles you are eligible for.
