The opportunity: Markel UK is a sector focused insurance, tax and legal provider focusing solely on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and part of a multi-billion and financially strong “A” rated global corporation, serving regional brokers and UK businesses with a variety of sector specific solutions. We currently operate out of seven sites across the UK, a result of growth by acquisition. We have come together as a UK business over the last five years under a common brand and a common functional leadership model. We have set the strategy to double the size of the business by 2025, having doubled the size since 2016. We have seen successful and profitable growth and see specialist insurance solutions as the way to continue to deliver that ambition.
Our growth will come through existing and new Liability and Property product lines. We continue to invest in our Underwriting team to support our growing portfolio. This involves the creation of some new opportunities for growth through development of appetite in existing lines or new appetite and products. This role will be responsible for the development of a profitable and growing portfolio, working with the Sales, Actuarial and Claims teams.
The role will support marketing promotion and launch of new products and support Sales in strategic broker opportunities. The individual will work closely with the wider underwriting leadership team to monitor and manage product profitability and support on referrals in accordance with delegated underwriting authorities.
What you’ll be doing:
- Portfolio management of the Property account supporting overall development, growth and profitability.
- Supporting underwriting manager(s) with profitable growth within their respective business lines including UK Retail and International operations.
- Respond to top tier referrals business from underwriters, delegated cover holders and claims department in accordance with underwriting authorities.
- Work as part of the underwriting team to help build skills, product knowledge and capability across the underwriting function.
- In conjunction with the other business functions, support continuous improvement of technical underwriting guides and tools.
- Review and analyse new portfolio, scheme or facility opportunities presented by the sales teams. Make recommendations for successful participation.
- Drive and raise awareness across broker development and underwriting sales communities within National Markets.
- Participate as part of the wider Markel team in market promotion and product launches.
- Support the sales teams in strategic broker discussions; respond to market tenders and attend client meetings.
- Monitor and report activities and provide timely and relevant management information. This includes consultation with aggregation and reinsurance teams.
- Role model the Markel Style and contribute to product leadership across the business, working with colleagues across Markel International.

- A successful personal history of underwriting property business over a number of years in the UK retail broker market.
- A strong technical knowledge of product coverage and market dynamics.
- Demonstrable track record in delivering profitable results in these classes, over multiple years.
- A good understanding of the regulatory obligations for underwriting and distribution of insurance products.
- Work well as part of a cross functional team delivering new propositions to market along with sales, marketing and actuarial.
- Strong and proactive communication skills.
