Ambulance Care Assistant – Mental Health
We have a fantastic opportunity for an Ambulance Care Assistant (Secure Mental Health) to join our amazing team based in Hertfordshire. Join our Safe Care Division (Secure Mental Health) and help make a difference.
Your main responsibility will be supporting the police and other professionals with transporting service users to and from healthcare facilities. You will work as part of a three‑person team and must hold a full UK driving licence. Full training will be provided.
This role is a full‑time 4‑on‑4 off covering the full seven days a week, working 12‑hour shifts. You must be able to work all shifts, including night shifts.

Main Duties
- Work as part of a team to support service users on board
- Ensure safe and responsible driving of the vehicle
- Assist service users with challenging behaviour and/or mental health illnesses
- Support challenging service users who may need physical intervention
- Work with police and other professionals to transport vulnerable service users between hospitals, homes, prisons and medical care settings
- Liaise with hospital staff and police for safe conveyance of service users
- Lift, secure and help service users in and out of the ambulance
- Hand over service users to appropriate staff on arrival at treatment centres/hospitals
- Transfer service users from beds to stretchers, chairs to chairs or similar in and out of hospital and medical/commercial flights
- Keep the ambulance safe, clean and tidy
Qualifications
- Full manual UK driving licence
- Committed to patient care and ability to build rapport with patients
- Effective communicator with experience communicating in emotional and difficult circumstances
- Calm, considerate, careful driver with no more than six penalty points on licence
- Natural flair for team working and collaboration
- Physically fit for patient handling and occasional restraint when needed
- Able to problem‑solve and identify key changes in patient behaviour in demanding situations
