Our Shared Lives and Short Breaks service is looking for caring individuals across North Lanarkshire to become a Shared Lives and Short Breaks Carer.

The Role

Shared Lives provides short breaks, transitional and long‑term arrangements to individuals aged 16 or older who require care and support due to disability, condition or support need. It is sometimes likened to a foster carer, helping people live in their own community and community life, without having to live alone.

Responsibilities

• Support the individual in your own home and within family and community life.
• Create a safe, welcoming environment and manage day‑to‑day activities.
• Coordinate with the individual’s family and community, ensuring smooth transitions.
• Participate in regular carer‑forum meetings to share ideas, knowledge and experience.
• Maintain open communication with the Shared Lives team and attend follow‑up visits.

Who can become a Shared Lives Carer

If you have a spare room, time and a passion for making a difference, you could be a shared life carer. Carers come from all walks of life – from former care workers to retirees and parents with young children. All are enthusiastic about welcoming someone into their home and family life, with patience, empathy, good humour and a willingness to help.

Carers are self‑employed and receive a generous allowance, with additional help towards household costs. They can also develop professionally through Cornerstone’s award‑winning Training Academy.

Qualifications and Checks

• Background checks: application form, home visits, interview and mandatory checks through the Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme via Disclosure Scotland.
• Potential requirement for a criminal record certificate if you have spent more than 12 months outside the UK (excluding specified European countries) over the last ten years.
