NSC Staffing is seeking experienced Outside Machinist Technicians for an exciting upcoming project in Norfolk, Virginia. We seek candidates with 3-10 years of experience and a strong understanding of shipboard and industrial/commercial OSM practices, particularly in military and industrial environments.

Position Overview:
We are looking for a skilled Outside Machinist to join our team. In this role, you will install, maintain, and test various machinery and systems, including propulsion machinery, sea valves, steering gear, and more. This position offers the opportunity to utilize your expertise in mathematics, blueprints, and precision tooling while working in a dynamic shipyard environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Overhaul, maintain, and test pumps, valves, turbines, and other machinery components.
- Set up and operate portable machining tools and equipment.
- Apply basic machine shop mathematics for accurate measurements and installations.
- Lay out passage holes on bulkheads, decks, and other surfaces for various connections, such as shafting and steam lines.
- Install below-deck auxiliaries, including evaporators, heaters, and boilers, ensuring proper connections to steam systems.
- Test and inspect installed machinery during dock and sea trials.
- Maintain and care for all standard measuring and hand tools.
- Work independently to complete assigned tasks efficiently and accurately.
- Assist in determining necessary repairs to restore equipment to operational status.
- Install and repair foundations for operating machinery and ship armament components.
- Follow safety protocols and maintain proper use of hand and power tools.
Work Environment:
This role involves working inside and aboard offshore and onshore ships, often in confined spaces. You may encounter fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and high noise levels. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required, and the position may involve physical tasks such as climbing, bending, and lifting.
Physical Demands:
The physical requirements of this position include:
- Regularly standing, walking, and using hands to manipulate tools and equipment.
- Occasionally sitting, climbing, or crouching.
- Frequently lifting and moving up to 25 pounds, with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision requirements include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, as well as depth perception.
Position Type: This is a full-time position, with varying days and hours based on project schedules. Evening and weekend work may be required as necessary.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven experience disassembling, repairing, and installing machinery such as pumps, valves, and winches.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a marine Outside Machinist, Industrial Mechanic, or related field.
- Familiarity with dry dock operations for shafts, rudders, stabilizers, and propellers is preferred.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and schematic drawings.
- Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces while following shipyard protocols.
- Experience with diesel engines is a plus.
- Must be able to obtain TWIC and D-Bids badges through a background check.
