Job overview

The Neurophysiology department provides a responsive service of Neurophysiological testing for adults and children of all ages as out-patients, as well as an active in-patient service which includes referrals from the adult, liver, paediatrics, neonatal, trauma and neuro-intensive care units. This would include working off-site at the various associated hospitals and institutions.

Main duties of the job

We currently require a fully qualified and experienced Clinical Physiologist, who is willing to take challenge & responsibility to work in a busy department undertaking all the modalities of testing which will include EEG (ambulant/non ambulant/portable); Telemetry, AFT, Home telemetry, Nerve Conduction studies; all modalities of Evoked Potentials (experience in intensive care monitoring would be an advantage but not essential).

The successful candidate would work as part of a team for the day-to-day running of the department, and to liaise with the existing Sub specialty Clinical Physiologist. The Physiologist will also be involved in Telemetry (following in-house training as required) and out-of-hours emergency in-patient work and will then be required to participate in the on-call rota (which includes weekends and bank holidays).

Experience of working with a wide range of patients including children and people with learning disabilities or psychiatric disorders is essential as well as familiarity to navigate computer software and information technology.

You should demonstrate good verbal/written and oral communication skills, with competency and fluency of the English language. Overseas applicants must possess IELTS at level 7 or equivalent as specified in the visa requirement documents.

The candidate must possess either an HNC/NVQ in Physiological Measurement, BSc in Clinical Physiology or equivalent qualification.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide a comprehensive range of clinical neurophysiological investigations, including EEG, EMG, Nerve Conduction studies, Evoked potentials, intra-operative monitoring and EEG telemetry both routinely and as part of research programmes, as directed by the Senior Physiologist and to follow the instructions of the Clinical Director. The post is intended to give a broad range of experience in different aspects of clinical neurophysiology, with a wide variety of medical disorders including those which may be neurological and/or psychiatric in nature.

To undertake duties in the delivery of the clinical neurophysiological service on a day-to-day basis, under the general direction of the Senior Clinical Physiologist overseeing the Department.

To participate in providing out-of-hours cover as part of an on-call rota.

Job-holders will be expected to undertake a wide range of standard clinical neurophysiological investigations, independently together with some non-standard and complex investigations. (In-service training will be provided where appropriate). This work includes bedside recording in different parts of the hospital and off-site.

Supervision of lower grades will be expected in normal circumstances.

To ensure accurate logging and filing of data from the neurophysiological investigations.

To be responsible for its availability and integrity, and to follow the regulations relating to the Data Protection Act.

To keep up to date with the findings in the field of clinical neurophysiology, and to be prepared to learn new techniques. Teaching in techniques new to the post-holder will be provided. Attendance at meetings of the technicians' professional bodies and at regional study days, when feasible, is encouraged, as is study for higher qualifications such as HNC in MPPM with the Neurophysiology Module, or a relevant MSc. Attendance at meetings and seminars held in the Department each week is expected, under normal circumstances.

To undertake the full range of Evoked Potentials (Visual, Brainstem and Somatosensory). A detailed knowledge of these pathways will be required.

To participate in technician-led Nerve Conduction clinics.

To participate in teaching organised by the department for technicians, scientific, nursing and medical staff and visitors. To assist in the preparation of materials for teaching or research.

An opportunity to participate in research projects as part of the Departments programme of Research and Development.

Qualifications

  • BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology or BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science (Neurophysiology) or equivalent specialist training.
  • ANS Part 1 and/or B-Tec/GNVQ (Neurophysiology) or equivalent.

Experience

  • Experience of performing clinical EEG during work placements.

Skills & Knowledge

  • To communicate with staff within the Multidisciplinary team.

Personal Characteristics

  • Must be adaptable, forward-thinking, able to work well in a team and autonomously. Long hours of standing in intensive care units.
