The predicted salary is between 36000 - 60000 £ per year.
Our critical care department not only has 33 commissioned critical care beds for both level 2 and 3 patients, but we have also been able to create an exciting 5 bed enhanced surgical recovery unit. This enhanced surgical recovery area cares for elective post-operative patients. Our dedicated critical care team is also responsible for:
- Caring for critically ill patients in the hospital
- Caring for patients after major operations
- Providing first responder support to all unstable patients in the hospital
- Providing support to all patients with serious medical illness and instability
The royal site is also the regional specialist centre for infectious diseases, acute pancreatitis, hepatobiliary surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery, and thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP - a rare blood disease). Critical care also provides a critical care outreach service, follow-up clinics, and psychological support for patients, relatives, and staff. We have a research team within critical care based on the unit. We have a dedicated practice educator team, who provide extra support and training, and there are a variety of opportunities for CPD courses including the critical care course and various development opportunities for all staff.
Main duties of the job
The postholder will work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team under the supervision of the nurse with continuing responsibility of the unit. Key responsibilities will include:
- Development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes
- Participating in maintaining a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for all patients and carers
- Maintaining agreed standards of nursing care
- Determining nursing priorities and planning patient care
- Informing the nurse in charge when changes in circumstances may affect patient care
- Maintaining nursing records in accordance with the NMC and Trust guidelines
- Maintaining and improving quality of patient care through contribution to the development of Essence of Care and clinical benchmarking within the unit
- Ensuring due regard is given to customs, values, and spiritual beliefs of patients
- Providing information and support to patients/carers, ensuring all those involved in the care are aware of changes in the patient's condition
- Assisting in the safe custody, checking, and administration of drugs, including inotropes
- Developing/possessing the clinical knowledge and skills to care for critically ill patients, including the management of patients with multiple organ failure and complex nursing needs
- Developing/possessing the ability to undertake expanded practice, in order to optimise patient care, in accordance with unit and Trust policies
- Acting at all times in a manner that upholds the reputation of the Trust and safeguards the wellbeing and dignity of patients and their relatives
- Acting always in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct and Guidance documents and maintaining active status on NMC Register
- Taking every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve knowledge
- Identifying objectives within a PDP that support the delivery of high standards of clinical care
- Providing cover for and undertaking duties of absent colleagues as necessary

Minimum Requirements
- Registered Nurse, current NMC registration
- Diploma or degree in Nursing
Desirable Qualifications
- Mentorship/teaching qualification
- Post-registration qualification in relevant specialty
Experience
- Must have 6 months post-registration experience and successful completion of band 5 foundation gateway competencies
- Experience within relevant clinical setting
- Evidence of maintaining a clinical learning environment
- Evidence of working with students
Knowledge
- Knowledge of current nursing issues and clinical governance
- Demonstrates awareness of own limitations
