Have you created inspiring exhibitions, displays and/or experiences for a wide range of audiences? Would you like to create interpretation and audience-centred experiences for the Science Museum?

About us

Founded in 1857 and one of the world's leading science museums, the Science Museum aims to inspire visitors with its unparalleled collections of iconic objects and stories of incredible scientific achievement, reaching over three million visitors a year through award-winning exhibitions, galleries and exciting range of events and programming.

We are now recruiting for an Interpretation Developer to join on a permanent basis. This is a full-time role, working 35 hours per week and is based at the Science Museum in London with hybrid working available.

About the role

As Interpretation Developer, you will be responsible for crafting interpretation and audience-centred experiences for the Science Museum's programme of temporary exhibitions and permanent galleries, ranging from small displays and gallery improvements to exhibitions. You will champion effective, evidence-based interpretation and its transformative role in audience engagement, learning and enjoyment.

You will understand the role of design, digital media and text in exhibitions, and be skilled at writing briefs that inform and inspire designers and other creative contractors. You will be a creative and collaborative force behind each project, pushing yourself and your team to deliver high-quality, impactful and engaging exhibitions and displays.

You will advocate for and, where relevant, work closely with different communities to tell their stories and/or help them feel the Science Museum is a place for them. You will be working across a broad range of topics, introducing them to museum visitors, and striving to use creativity and innovative techniques to exceed our visitors' expectations.

About you

Joining us, you will have created inspiring exhibitions, displays and/or experiences for a wide range of audiences. You will have worked with curators or other subject specialists to develop audience-centred narratives and experiences.

Crucially, you will have the ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders. You will also be a good communicator with experience writing and/or guiding the writing of text for a defined target audience, to meet a brief or style. You will have an understanding of accessibility requirements for museum audiences and experience of developing inclusive approaches to broaden engagement.

Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
