As part of Nationwide’s exciting and growing team of Cloud Platform engineers, you’ll have a SRE (Site Reliability Engineer) mindset with the ability to act like a Developer and think like a Systems Operator. Our engineers are responsible for delivering Cloud technical solutions for assigned missions alongside providing consultancy and support services as required. For this role, you will spend at least two days per week, or if part-time, 40% of your working time, at our Swindon or London office.

What you will be doing:

  • Building and managing scalable, self-healing, globally distributed cloud platforms.
  • Driving efficiency, automation, and cost reduction by automating manual and repetitive tasks.
  • Developing features and artifacts for platform improvements leveraging automation and infrastructure as code.
  • Providing technical expertise throughout all stages of the product lifecycle.
  • Creating and adhering to standards and providing governance to contribute to process improvements.
  • Identifying and escalating dependencies, risks, and exceptions affecting the implementation of technical artifacts.
  • Sharing knowledge with peers to contribute to skills growth within Nationwide’s Engineering COE.
  • Leading and influencing architectural design decisions of network solutions, features, and fixes, ensuring robust connectivity between on-premise and cloud environments.
  • Overseeing DNS configurations and VPN connectivity, ensuring secure and reliable network access.
  • Configuring and managing Egress and East/West firewalls; familiarity with Palo Alto and Cisco technologies is beneficial.
  • Proactively troubleshooting network issues and providing effective solutions.
  • Ability to diagnose problems across the network stack and collaborate on resolutions.
  • Collaborating with architecture, security, engineering teams, and the wider Engineering Centre of Excellence to ensure seamless integration of network solutions.

About you:

  • Skilled Cloud Networking Engineers with hands-on or transferable experience supporting our 4c’s (Cloud, Containerisation, Coding, CI/CD).
  • Designing and implementing Cloud platforms (AWS) for elasticity and scalability.
  • Knowledge of infrastructure as code and post-deployment configuration management using tools such as Terraform and Ansible (familiarity preferred).
  • Automating deployment and monitoring of services in Public Cloud.
  • Implementing changes to production services to ensure uptime.
  • Strong experience in network engineering, including routing, firewalls, DNS, and VPNs.
  • Analyzing network traffic and developing security policies.
  • Understanding routing principles, including on-premise to cloud routing and vice versa, ensuring efficient data flow and resolving routing issues.
  • Familiarity with cloud networking, especially AWS (VPCs, Security Groups, NACLs, AWS Network Firewall), and hybrid environments.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex network issues and implement effective solutions.
