Are you a sound geek? Do you love DJing, creating and recording music, or producing your own podcasts? Or you might be front of house β working in a live music venue, theatre or touring with a band and desperate to be more hands on, or perhaps you work in radio or as a sound assistant in unscripted TV?
Following the unprecedented success of our West Midlands training scheme last year, BBC Studios Drama Productions are looking for expressions of interests for Trainee Sound Assistant opportunities on Father Brown and Sister Boniface.
Eligibility is a requirement of our funding and means we are able to offer paid placements. Please ensure you meet the following criteria before submitting an expression of interest:
- Living and based in the West Midlands
- Aged 19 years or over
- Not currently in full or part time education
Father Brown films in different locations around the Cotswolds area, including places with little or no public transport options. It is the responsibility of successful applicants to ensure they are able to get to these locations as part of the training scheme. Silent Witness shoots in Digbeth. The Trainee Sound Assistant is a key supporting role within the Sound department. Working with sound professionals with many years of experience, the opportunity will offer individuals the chance to learn and develop in a safe, supportive and nurturing filming environment. The Trainee Sound Assistant will learn about what equipment is used and how itβs operated. From the mixing desk to mixing up talent, they will support with recording and replaying material, as well as helping with administrative, forward planning tasks. They will be shown how to transfer, upload and organise files, and get hands on experience wherever possible.
We want to hear from people who are excited by sound β whether professionally or in their spare time β and interested in working in the world of TV drama. To be successful in this trainee role, you must have the following:
- A genuine passion for sound demonstrated by a clear effort to gain experience β whether through making your own content or via more professional channels
- Demonstrable basic knowledge about sound equipment and ways of storing, recording and editing sound
- Experience and examples of when you have worked in environments where there are conflicting priorities and problems to solve
- Experience and examples of when you have worked as part of a team and shared tasks with others as well as taking direction
If confirmed, opportunities will last between 3 and 6 weeks and run from April to August 2025.
