Job Overview
We\’re seeking a Consultant Stroke Physician to become part of our evolving stroke department at North Bristol NHS Trust to contribute to the growth and strategic development of our services. Our focus is on driving improvement within acute stroke services for Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG), extending support to the wider Severn Region and beyond, encompassing advanced procedures such as Mechanical Thrombectomy performed 24/7. Since May 2023, our Comprehensive Stroke Centre at the Brunel Building, Southmead Hospital has expanded its hyperacute stroke unit (HASU) and acute stroke unit (ASU), delivering the highest number of thrombectomies in the UK. The successful candidate will support the delivery of acute services, Mon‑Fri transient ischaemic attack (TIA) clinics, and ward referrals at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, and participate in bi‑weekly ward consultant rounds at South Bristol Community Hospital and/or Weston General Hospital.
Responsibilities
Main duties of the job include clinical duties, supervision and education, and facilitating research and audit.
- Clinical duties: management of acute admissions including thrombolysis and thrombectomy, supervising the care of all patients in HASU and ASU, providing bi‑weekly consultant level input to patients cared for in the SSARU at South Bristol Community Hospital or Weston General Hospital, delivery of TIA clinics at Bristol Royal Infirmary.
- Supervision and education: clinical and educational supervision of juniors including senior clinical fellows, contribution to training and education of the stroke team.
The successful applicant will be a team player, willing to work flexibly to provide cover for other consultants who cover the Stroke Services. The applicant can be from any parent specialty, but must have experience in stroke care. The job plan and clinic commitment will be adapted to be suitable to the appointee.
Qualifications and Experience
- Essential Criteria
- MRCP or equivalent
- Maintain full registration with the GMC
- GMC Specialist Register at the time of the appointment
- Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent)
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required to gain UK CCT in General and Geriatric Medicine or Neurology or Acute Medicine
- Training in diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular conditions
- Evidence of recent CME and reasonable training progression at this stage of career
- Experience in audit projects and written outputs
- Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues
- Desirable Criteria
- Higher academic qualification e.g. PhD / MD
- CCT in Stroke Medicine
- Completion of a general management course or programme
- Proven track record in research and willingness to undertake further research
- Evidence of relevant publications in peer‑reviewed journals
- Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management
- Ability to inspire, motivate and develop junior medical staff
- Ambition to work with the department to develop new services benefiting patients
Applicants should have a CCT or be within six months of achieving this at the date of interview or be listed on the GMC’s specialist register to be eligible for application for a substantive post. CESR applicants are welcome and must have their CESR in place at the time of interview.
