Purpose
Lead the work to develop and test item response theory (IRT) tools to operationalise IRT analysis in live awarding and assessment functioning. Provide training in IRT methods and work with colleagues in the Technical team (assessment research, design, technical standards and awarding and statistical intelligence) to make sound design decisions that work well for the business. With other technical colleagues, inform the assessment development discussion on appropriate awarding techniques. The postholder will be a source of technical expertise in standard-setting and maintenance internally and externally.
Key Accountabilities
- Use expertise in coding and expertise in psychometrics to create analytical tools
- Provide training and support on the created analytical tools
- Provide training on assessment and measurement principles to internal colleagues
- Provide expert technical support to all Pearson qualifications product and assessment teams
- Provide expert input to, and collaborate with, members of internal and external (STAG, STWG, TQTG) working groups
- Work collaboratively with assessments to deliver a programme of training to promote the use of assessment functioning to drive improvements in the quality of assessments
- Cultivate relationships with key stakeholders, including regulators and researchers in the field of assessment, measurement and qualifications
- Keeping up to date with developments in assessment and measurement in the UK and internationally, and disseminating as appropriate
- Present and disseminate research at academic conferences and other forums
Essential Skills and Experience
- Advanced degree in educational assessment or educational measurement
- Advanced expertise in statistical programming languages
- Specialist expertise in item response theory
- Specialist expertise in standard setting and maintaining
- Ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels
- Work flexibly to manage changing and competing priorities and absorb complex information rapidly to address complex issues
- Excellent written and oral communications skills, and the ability to communicate complex ideas and information to a range of audiences and stakeholders
- Ability to analyse and interpret complex statistical data and technical information
- Manage effectively people and resources to achieve objectives and develop staff, including where they are not direct reports
