A leading medical research institution is seeking an experienced and creative Network Engineer to play a key role in supporting the IT infrastructure that underpins internationally recognised scientific research and teaching.

You’ll join a skilled Systems and Networks team responsible for maintaining a complex server and network environment supporting over 6,000 users across a multi-site organisation. This is a rare opportunity to help shape and deliver cutting-edge IT services within a world-class academic and research setting—without being locked into a commercial IT environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the design, installation and ongoing management of the organisation’s enterprise network infrastructure.
  • Develop network management tools and help modernise legacy systems with an eye on security, scalability, and performance.
  • Provide advanced administration across network and associated infrastructure, including VMware, firewalls, LAN/WAN, data centres, and monitoring platforms.
  • Manage and contribute to strategic IT transformation projects including network refreshes, systems integration, and onboarding of new departments.
  • Provide technical leadership and third-line support for critical services.
About You:

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Strong hands-on experience with Cisco and Fortinet (or similar) technologies.
  • Deep technical knowledge of enterprise networking (switches, firewalls, routing, cabling).
  • A practical understanding of IT security best practices.
  • A track record of identifying service improvements and delivering creative technical solutions.
  • Familiarity with both Linux and Microsoft server environments.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
Desirable:
  • Experience managing large-scale networks across multiple locations.
  • Familiarity with NAC tools, configuration management platforms, and IT service frameworks such as ITIL or ISO27001.
