Do you want to help power your career and be part of an evolving energy industry? An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Communications Advisor to join our Communications Team. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing the organisation’s overall internal communications and engagement strategy. Creating two-way engagement with colleagues across all areas of the organisation, promoting an inclusive working environment and making colleagues feel informed and connected with the work of the organisation and its values.

Along with a competitive salary between £35,000 and £40,000 depending on experience, we also offer:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the delivery of Northern Powergrid’s internal communication and engagement strategy, ensuring the organisation’s values, principles and people news are communicated effectively to build employee advocacy and drive continued improvement.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Communications and Internal Communications Lead to successfully implement our internal communications strategy across all internal audiences.
  • Maintain the calendar and plan for all internal communication activities, ensuring timely delivery and appropriateness for the target audience.
  • Develop and deliver content for both virtual and in-person staff events.
  • Create engaging content for internal communications channels (intranet, email, videos, in-person events, virtual events etc) regularly evaluating the efficiency of these channels and making continuous improvements.
  • Handle internal communications sensitively and timely, especially in relation to key external announcements.
  • Collaborate closely with the wider Communications team to identify shared story and content opportunities.
  • Provide copywriting assistance to various areas of the organisation with internal communications needs, aligning copy with our tone of voice and key themes.
  • Deliver clear and effective communications in response to crisis or emergency situations and play an active role in any major incident responses.
  • Deputise for the Internal Communications Lead, as required, and/or act as lead representative for the Internal Communications team in various internal project groups.
  • Participate in the management of the day-to-day communications requirements such as managing the Internal Communications mailbox, producing newsletters and supporting our Health, Safety and Training team with their regular cadence of communications.
  • Provide out of hours support for communications as a participant of the response/recovery team to deliver effective communications in major incidents and take part in the out of hours rota.

Key Competencies:

  • Excellent Communication and Content Creation for multiple platforms, including intranet, email, videos, and events.
  • Strong organisational skills for Project and Event Management.
  • Ability to work effectively with different teams and stakeholders.
  • Competence in delivering clear and effective communications during crisis or emergency situations.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances, proactively seek improvements in communication strategies and channels, and identify opportunities for shared stories and content.
  • Skills in fostering employee advocacy and engagement, ensuring alignment with organisational values and culture, and facilitating employee feedback to drive continuous improvement.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Commensurate experience in an internal communications role, ideally in-house, working with colleagues in multiple locations.
  • Experience creating engaging content across various channels, including intranet, email, videos and events.
  • Experience in planning and executing both virtual and in-person events.
  • Experience in handling communications during crisis or emergency situations.
  • Experience working effectively with different teams and stakeholders, including senior leadership and cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in creating and publishing both written and audio-visual content.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Professional qualification / certificate in internal communications.
  • Experience of internal communications in an organisation which includes a field-based workforce.
  • Experience with Canva and the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Good understanding of the electricity industry.
