Elevation Recruitment are working with a well-established and successful West Yorkshire business, to help them recruit a Design Engineer. Our client designs and manufactures specialist machinery for a variety of industries including mining, material-handling, water treatment, chemical processing and general manufacturing. Role Summary
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the design, development, and integration of electric motors and drive systems. This role is ideal for an engineer with experience in AC motors, who is looking to combine hands-on technical responsibilities with cross-functional collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
- Apply mechanical and electrical engineering principles to the design and analysis of electric motors, including induction and permanent magnet types.
- Develop knowledge of motor theory, drive technologies, and Eco-Design regulations.
- Assist in the specification, design validation, and risk assessment of motors used in Hazardous Area applications (e.g. ATEX, IECEx).
- Conduct performance analysis and engineering calculations using Excel, MATLAB, or equivalent tools.
- Produce accurate 3D models and 2D drawings using CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
- Liaise with sales, engineering, and manufacturing teams to support product modifications and respond to technical enquiries.
- Maintain technical documentation, including datasheets, outline drawings, test certificates, and compliance records.
- Work with suppliers to define specifications, evaluate design proposals, and support failure investigations and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Provide engineering support throughout the project lifecycle, including installation, commissioning, and post-sales phases.
- Support product lifecycle management activities such as BOM creation, change control, and improvement projects.
Candidate Requirements
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- A minimum of 2–3 years' experience working with AC motors.
- Strong understanding of core mechanical principles, thermodynamics, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Proficient in 2D and 3D CAD, with the ability to produce clear and accurate technical drawings.
- Confident in data handling and performance analysis, with strong Excel skills.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and high attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information clearly to various stakeholders.
- Self-motivated, enthusiastic, and capable of working both independently and as part of a team.
