Sub-editor, APL Media
APL Media, based in Kentish Town, is seeking a sub-editor to join its friendly company, which focuses on travel and lifestyle content. This is a maternity cover position for up to a year and is an ideal role for a self-starter who’s calm under pressure, has a superb and meticulous grasp of the English language, excellent grammatical skills, is able to juggle a busy workload and is looking for a medium-sized company to flex their talent.
APL Media publishes a range of titles for consumer and trade publications. Its flagship title is National Geographic Traveller (UK) and its offshoots, from its specialist Guides to its Collection series. The company also has a busy events programme, its biggest being the National Geographic Traveller (UK) Food Festival, as well as the Travel Media Awards.
The role involves subbing all content APL Media produces, from long features for print to advertorials for national newspapers, press releases, social media posts and events newsletters.
Subbing responsibilities
- To sub-edit travel and lifestyle content across a variety of publications and platforms.
- To ensure all published content is factually correct.
- To cut copy to fit, where necessary, and ensure everything is in house style, according to the publication.
- To be adept at picking up house style and moving between varying style guides (including US English for trade titles).
- To work across departments and be an excellent multi-tasker, as the job often involves juggling several different projects.
- To work closely with the design team, editors and production.
- To proof pages when needed.
- A flair with headlines and intros would be superb, while original ideas and input are always welcome.
Skills/requirements
- Proven experience as a sub-editor.
- Proficient in InDesign and MS Office.
- Able to navigate CRM systems and use project management systems where required.
- To be able to work efficiently and independently, but to also be a team player.
- Good organisational skills.
- Good people skills.
- An ability to sub everything across the portfolio, including presentations as well as long- and short-form copy for very different titles and platforms.
- An ability to prioritise their workload and work accurately and at speed.
