Mechanical Handling & Moorings Assistant Package Manager required to work in Plymouth on a large scale infrastructure project. Mace are engaged as Delivery Partner to Babcock in supporting the delivery of a major upgrade of existing facilities within HMNB Devonport. These major upgrades will enable deep maintenance work packages for the latest class of nuclear-powered fleet submarines. Dock upgrades to support the Astute operational programme will enable optimisation of maintenance. Mace are playing a key role in delivering these upgrades.

The key requirements will be to plan, direct, manage and oversee implementation of the Mechanical Handling and Mooring design & manufacturing works to ensure the clients goals and objectives are accomplished within prescribed schedule, budget and defined health, safety and quality parameters. Effective communication with client, contractor and sub-contractors, consultants, management of client and project stakeholders is required.

You will support delivery from project inception/brief, through design development and planning, contractor procurement and construction phase in accordance with the overall delivery program and agreed project milestones. You will manage tasks and associated deliverables in support of Project Managers and senior leaders, alongside the wider project and client teams, to ensure the timely and accurate delivery of the project. Reviewing of design and engagement through the design process. Assisting the design team to manage the design process. Assisting the management of packages through procurement and delivery. Overseeing procurement of packages, reviewing and appointing subcontractors alongside the commercial team. Providing support to construction managers to ensure trade work packages are attaining the agreed delivery programme. Managing and review Contractor Reporting (Dashboard). Chairing regular Progress Meetings. Monitoring the Contractor Design, Programme and Deliverables whilst ensuring safe methods of work are being adhered to. Reviewing and Monitor Key Quality Sign Offs. Managing and auditing Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) of cranes and mooring equipment. Reviewing and Monitoring incoming changes and advise on scope change and programme. Reviewing and authorising Technical Document Submittals. Reviewing and authorising Requests for Information (RFIs). Issuing Monthly Contractor Performance to Programme Manager. Reviewing and liaising with the Temporary Works Co-ordinator as required. Upon completion of package works, ensuring Package Close Out is undertaken and completed.

You will manage parts of projects independently, with oversight from other Project Managers.

You’ll need to have:

  • Experience with engineering design processes
  • Familiarity with procurement and contract management (in particular NEC Contracts)
  • Experience in delivering mechanical handling/crane or other projects within a marine environment.
  • Time management and organisational skills
  • Strong influencing and people management skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Track record in working in a regulated industry – Rail, Aviation etc.
  • Relevant Degree qualifications (in an engineering / marine discipline) or BTEC / HNCCSCS
  • Nuclear and Defence experience preferable

You’ll also have:

  • Basic understanding of relevant crane design and quality industry standards Including BS 7121, BE EN 13001 and BS EN 13849
  • Strong understanding of relevant legislation and regulations such as CDM 2015, PUWER 1998 and LOLER 1998
  • Membership of RICS, CIOB, APM, ICE or equivalent demonstrable professional or personal development.
  • Experience in project management, ideally in a property or infrastructure sector.
  • A developing knowledge of commercial and financial considerations.
  • Experience of developing and forming relationships with other stakeholders within projects.
  • Knowledge of how carbon and sustainability considerations will shape the outlook of the projects you are working on.
