The NHS Fife Pharmacy & Medicines Directorate serves a population of approximately 380,000 people and is provided by an integrated team of around 300 Pharmacy staff who each play a part in delivering the highest quality care to everyone in Fife. As a Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician you will be part of this team too, working on a rotational basis across different pharmacy settings gaining valuable experience along the way at the same time as building a portfolio of work-based evidence.
The Pharmacy Technician qualification, called the “Diploma in Pharmacy Services”, is gained through a combination of knowledge-based learning (PDA in Pharmacy Services SCQF level 7) via a blended learning format with West College Scotland or Fife College and vocational education (SVQ in Pharmacy Service at SCQF level 8) over 2 years. On successful completion of the training you will register with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) in order to practice as a Pharmacy Technician. Once registered you will be eligible to apply for Pharmacy Technician roles in any one of the many pharmacy sectors.
Applicants must have the following qualifications as a minimum:
- National 5 grades A to C (or equivalent) in English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry or equivalent
- OR Modern Apprenticeship underpinning knowledge in Pharmacy at SCQF Level 7 (Including Chemistry) and SQA in Pharmacy Services SCQF level 6
- If English is not your first language, IELTS 7 is required (regulatory GPhC requirement).
Applicants must also meet the eligibility criteria for the Technical Apprenticeship Scheme as detailed by Skills Development Scotland.
Please note there are 2 training options available:
- In a Primary Care pharmacy base with the opportunity to spend time in GP practices working alongside the clinical pharmacy teams and rotations to a Local Community Pharmacy.
- In Hospital services time is spent in our core supply departments within the hospital dispensaries, stores and aseptic unit. You will also spend time in clinical areas working closely with multidisciplinary teams.
Rotations will be allocated on appointment and can be subject to change for business needs. Some travel will be required to move between settings. Applicants who are shortlisted for interview may be considered for either role.
Trainees are paid a percentage of the pay band maximum for the qualified rate which is dependent on the duration of the training period. Existing permanent employees must first discuss this opportunity with their substantive line manager. The secondment policy can be found here Hub.
If you do not have approval for a secondment from your current line manager, you will not be able to progress your application for a fixed term post. External applicants, with continuous NHS Service, must also have in place a secondment agreement, from their existing board to apply for this post.
Due to legislative changes from 1 April 2025, this post may require a different level of criminal records check done than is currently the case. If the post is assessed as a "regulated role", your appointment will be subject to joining the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. If there is any change to what is currently required, this will be confirmed by either the Hiring Manager or the Recruitment Team.
