A wonderful opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Skilled Gardener on a beautiful and diverse private garden South of Guildford, Surrey. This incredible Georgian property stands surrounded by 20 acres, 8 acres of which are formal gardens, and the remainder being plantation, meadows and woodland. The property is part of a wider estate mainly farmland.
The family are seeking a full time Skilled Gardener to work directly under a longstanding, knowledgeable and experienced Head Gardener. The main garden, rich in heritage and interest comprises of a walled garden designed by Tom Stuart-Smith with an established kitchen garden, herbaceous beds, Spring bulbs, Rhododendrons, shrub borders with a wide variety and collection of roses, Wisteria, large Victorian glasshouse, polytunnel, potager, lawns, mature and young trees, yew hedges, orchard, Victorian fresh water pool, a stream that runs through with meadows, plantation area and woodland.
The owners are passionate about their garden and have invested considerable time and care into its development. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with a small, collaborative team of three, under the guidance of the Head Gardener, while also working independently when required.
Candidates will ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification and/or good horticultural knowledge, and practical gardening experience. The owners are open to candidates with the right attitude, energy and enthusiasm looking to further develop their career and they would gladly support further training and courses to do so e.g. chainsaw and spray certificates.
Applicants should have good physical fitness and take pride in their work and the continuous development and maintenance of the garden to a high standard. The ability to use a range of garden machinery is important as well as the confidence in working up ladders. A driving licence would be beneficial and experience with driving a small tractor but not essential.
Working hours are 8.00 am to 4.30 pm with a morning break and lunch break. Occasional flexibility may be required for weekend work when the gardens open to the public for which time off in lieu will be given. References and DBS checks will be required at offer stage.
