I'm recruiting for an exciting and critical position within the Civil Works Alliance (CWA) - Materials Manager, supporting the delivery of Sizewell C, a 3.2-gigawatt nuclear power station set to power around 6 million homes with reliable, low-carbon electricity for the next 60 years. This is a career-defining opportunity to join a highly skilled and collaborative team driving one of the UK's most significant infrastructure projects.
As Materials Manager, you'll be a subject matter expert in all things materials, leading the specification, testing, and integration of materials across the marine and tunnelling works.
Key Responsibilities:- Lead the end-to-end delivery of construction materials testing (concrete, earthworks, grout, aggregates, etc.) across the marine and tunnelling packages.
- Review and interpret technical specifications, advising on materials suitability, compliance, and constructability.
- Coordinate and oversee laboratory and field testing activities, ensuring full compliance with project and industry standards.
- Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers, consultants, and subcontractors to ensure alignment and high standards throughout the supply chain.
- Collaborate with internal design teams, temporary works designers, and the lead design consultant to ensure material solutions are fully integrated into permanent and temporary works.
- Support procurement and commercial teams by providing robust input into supplier selection, technical compliance, and value engineering opportunities.
- Lead technical assurance, materials risk management, and the resolution of complex materials-related issues on-site.
- Set and maintain high standards of safety and quality, ensuring procedures, testing protocols, and compliance frameworks are followed consistently.
- Manage budgets, resources, and performance of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, technicians, and consultants.
- Mentor and develop team members, promoting a high-performance culture and technical excellence.
- Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of construction materials, especially concrete mix design, sustainability considerations, and modern testing methodologies.
- Leadership & Management: Proven ability to lead and motivate diverse teams, manage consultants and suppliers, and deliver against key milestones in a high-pressure environment.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across multiple internal and external stakeholders, including contractors, designers, and regulatory bodies.
- Problem Solving: A proactive mindset with the ability to anticipate risks, identify innovative solutions, and drive continuous improvement.
- Industry Knowledge: A thorough understanding of CDM regulations, quality systems, sustainability frameworks, and UK infrastructure procurement practices.
- Professional Credentials: Degree-qualified (or equivalent experience) in Civil, Structural, or Materials Engineering. Membership of a relevant professional institution is highly desirable.
- Agility & Adaptability: Comfortable working in a complex and evolving project environment, with a positive attitude towards change and innovation.
- Compliance & Assurance: Experienced in applying and maintaining industry accreditations and ensuring testing labs meet required standards.
