An IT Consultancy are seeking a Systems Architect to join the team on an initial 6-8 month project working on an Outside IR35 basis & remote basis. The role will be supporting a Gas utilities client and will be working on an end-to-end technical design and assurance of a national infrastructure deployment programme.

As an overview of the Systems Architect project details:

  • Rate: £450-£500/day Outside IR35
  • Duration: Initial 6 Months, possible 2-month extension.
  • Location: Mostly from home but there will be a requirement for travel. So we need someone to be flexible.

Role Overview: We are seeking an experienced Technical Architect to lead the end-to-end technical design and assurance of a national infrastructure deployment programme. The role involves shaping cabinet design standards, ensuring configuration consistency across network, server, and security layers, and working closely with engineering teams to translate architectural intent into deliverable, repeatable solutions. The successful candidate will operate at both strategic and technical levels, providing hands-on guidance across multiple workstreams while ensuring alignment with governance, security, and operational requirements.

Systems Architect Key Responsibilities:

  • Own and define the technical architecture for cabinet-based infrastructure across IT, OT (Operational Technology), and Comms domains
  • Develop and maintain design standards, including cabinet layout, power distribution, cooling, network topology, and security zones
  • Oversee the integration of hardware (switches, servers, UDGs, connectivity modules) within a consistent, scalable framework
  • Act as technical design authority across configuration standards (e.g. VLANs, hypervisor setup, UDG protocol config)
  • Support version control and configuration governance processes, aligned with Management of Change (MoC) principles
  • Review and approve Bill of Materials (BoMs) and technical specifications for build and deployment
  • Collaborate with Infrastructure, Network, and Security specialists to align component-level implementation with architectural intent
  • Engage with internal stakeholders and delivery teams to ensure that technical designs remain feasible and supportable in the field
  • Provide input into test and validation criteria to ensure built solutions meet quality expectations

Systems Architect Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Proven experience within the Gas industry.
  • Proven experience in infrastructure architecture, involving cabinet design, edge computing, or industrial IT environments
  • Strong understanding of networking, server architecture, and IT/OT separation principles
  • Experience defining standards for switch configuration, hypervisors, and secure data transmission protocols (e.g. MQTT, Syslog, SFTP)
  • Familiarity with hardware integration, rack layout, patching standards, and data centre or field-based deployments
  • Ability to document and present architectural decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Knowledge of configuration version control and MoC processes
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and collaborative working across delivery teams
  • Experience supporting large-scale, multi-site deployment programmes
