The successful applicant should have a successful VMware-to-Proxmox migration or a very similar proven track record. They will require a blend of virtualisation expertise, Linux fluency, and practical migration experience.
Core Technical Skills:
- Strong Virtualisation Background: Deep understanding of VMware vSphere/ESXi environments, including VM configuration, storage, and networking. Familiarity with Proxmox VE architecture, including clustering, storage models, and native backup tools like Proxmox Backup Server.
- Linux Systems Administration: Proxmox is Debian-based, so comfort with Linux CLI, shell scripting, and system services is essential. Ability to troubleshoot boot issues, kernel modules, and hardware compatibility.
- Migration Tooling & Disk Conversion: Experience with converting VMDK to QCOW2 or RAW formats. Familiarity with tools like qemu-img, virt-v2v, or Proxmox's built-in import wizard. Equally able to build new Windows 2019 Servers rebuilding services and systems where needed.
- Networking & Firewall Configuration: Understanding of virtual bridges, VLANs, and Proxmox's firewall model. Ability to replicate VMware's virtual networking setup in Proxmox.
- Backup & Recovery Planning: Knowledge of backup strategies pre- and post-migration. Experience with tools like Nakivo (which supports both VMware and Proxmox) or Proxmox Backup Server.
Soft Skills & Project Readiness:
- Pre-Migration Planning: Ability to map out dependencies, assess VM compatibility, and plan for downtime. Use Monday.com to project manage. Familiarity with licensing implications and vendor support transitions (e.g. from VMware to open-source Proxmox).
- Documentation & Communication: Clear documentation of implementation, migration steps, rollback plans, and system changes. The ability to liaise with stakeholders, especially in healthcare or charity environments where service continuity is critical and uptime must remain constant.
