We are looking for a property dispute resolution solicitor with experience (and/or an active interest) in property and utilities work. As part of the Property & Networks legal team, you will provide advice to key stakeholders and help to safeguard Scotia Gas Networks Limited’s group of companies.

We deliver safety, warmth, and comfort to homes and businesses. Every role, whether in the office or on the front line, plays a key part in this mission. Here’s how you will contribute:

  • Providing prompt, effective, pragmatic and accurate legal advice on all aspects of litigation with property and utilities elements in order to minimise the financial and legal risks to SGN.
  • Advising the business on overbuilds, rights of access, property damage claims, breaches of property agreements and injunctions.
  • Drafting and responding to letters before action.
  • Managing litigation cases above SGN’s insurance deductible.
  • Advising on statutory powers contained in the Gas Act 1986 and associated legislation.
  • Instructing, assisting and managing external sources of legal advice, including Counsel where necessary.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues in the SGN legal team and across the business to improve efficiency and sustainability.
  • Maintaining and enhancing current relationships, and ways of working, with key business partners.
  • Educating the business in relevant legal issues and raising the awareness levels across the group by attending and advising at meetings and training sessions.
  • Drafting, updating and maintaining standard form documentation, guidance notes etc and ensuring the retention and dissemination of legal 'know-how' within the legal team.
  • Upholding the values of SGN and always putting safety at the forefront of decisions.

What you will need:

  • A valid practising certificate in England & Wales;
  • 6+ years PQE;
  • A comprehensive knowledge of contract law, claims in tort, a good knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules and ADR experience;
  • Relevant property legal experience (with some utilities background);
  • Enthusiasm, professional motivation, an ability to work well independently and as part of a team and flexibility;
  • Comfort in working closely with all levels including Directors and Senior Managers;
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
