Reports to: Café Manager

Hours: Part time, 32 hours per week across Monday-Sunday

Salary: £13.50 per hour + additional responsibilities payment for hosting work experience

Luminary Limited runs the Employability Support Programme, offering training, mentoring, and trauma-informed guidance to women on their journey to independence. Luminary Bakery Ltd contributes to Luminary's social impact by offering work experience placements, apprenticeships, and job opportunities for graduates of the charity's training programmes. Luminary Bakery produces beautiful, artisanal baked goods and is working toward generating sustainable income to fund the charity.

Your Role as a Café Assistant Manager

As a Café Assistant Manager, you play an essential role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the café. You support the Café Manager in daily operations, manage the team, oversee quality service, and foster a positive and inclusive atmosphere for both staff and customers. You lead by example, maintain high standards, and contribute to creating a welcoming, community-focused café environment. You will also host work experience once a week for the women currently on the Luminary Charity Training Programme.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operations & Quality Control
    • Support the Café Manager in maintaining product consistency and quality for food and beverages.
    • Ensure safety procedures are followed to create a safe work environment.
    • Oversee the timely completion of tasks and monitor production to meet high-quality standards.
    • Assist in maintaining café equipment and report any issues promptly to the Café Manager.
    • Ensure the café stays clean and organized, maintaining high cleanliness standards across all areas.
    • Handle opening and closing duties to ensure café security and readiness for the next shift.
  • Team Leadership & Training
    • Train new staff, and host work experience for women on the Luminary Charity Training Programme.
    • Supervise and support staff during shifts to ensure smooth operations.
    • Assist in organising training sessions and team-building activities.
    • Provide feedback, recognition, and coaching to team members to foster a positive and collaborative work culture.
    • Investigate and report any incidents or accidents that occur during shifts.
  • Customer Service & Community Engagement
    • Ensure high-quality customer service by supporting staff in delivering friendly, efficient service.
    • Build relationships with regular customers and foster a welcoming atmosphere.
    • Support community-building initiatives that positively impact the women the café serves.
    • Lead by example in providing excellent customer service and resolving customer complaints in a timely manner.
  • Administration & Reporting
    • Assist in maintaining accurate records of sales, production, and customer service activities.
    • Assist the Café Manager achieve sales targets and operational goals.
    • Coordinate with the Café Manager regarding inventory, supplies, and resources needed for the shift.
    • Take on the Café Manager's responsibilities during their absence to ensure business continuity.
    • Oversee daily financial transactions, ensuring accuracy and integrity.

Job Requirements & Abilities

  • Experience
    • At least 1 year as a shift leader (or similar role) in a fast-paced café environment, with strong knowledge of coffee preparation.
    • Experience in training others in coffee preparation and customer service.
  • Interpersonal Skills
    • Demonstrate strong leadership and communication skills.
    • Ability to multitask and work efficiently under pressure while maintaining a customer-focused approach.
    • Skilled in conflict resolution and maintaining team morale.
  • Leadership
    • Motivate and support the team while leading by example.
    • Apply excellent problem-solving abilities.
  • Physical Ability
    • Handle and lift items up to 50 lbs.
  • Flexibility
    • Willing to work varied hours and days as per business needs.
