Consultant Gastroenterologist

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Gastroenterologist in the Department of Digestive Disorders, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Every attempt will be made to accommodate sub-specialty interests depending on individuals. There is no commitment for General Medicine in these posts.

This post will be offered at 8 Programmed Activities, but there are more opportunities in the wider Medicine and Unscheduled Care Portfolio for applicants seeking additional Programmed Activities. If appointed, the job plan will be discussed on an individual basis.

Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is the major teaching hospital for the North of Scotland. The Department of Digestive Disorders provides tertiary services for the NHS Grampian Region and the Shetland and Orkney Islands. The successful applicants would join a team of 14 NHS Consultants, and one Associate Specialist.

The Department of Digestive Disorders offers a full range of secondary and tertiary luminal gastroenterology services including advanced IBD, advanced endoscopy, Hepatology and nutrition services. In patient care takes place in the Emergency Care Centre with a dedicated 29 bed Gastroenterology ward. Clinic and Endoscopy facilities have also been renovated in recent years to provide excellent facilities. The unit has an active research programme working jointly with The University of Aberdeen. There are excellent post graduate educational facilities further enhanced by the Suttie Centre for medical education.

Full registration with a licence to practise with the GMC is required. (licence to practise must be in place prior to starting in post). For more information visit

Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register from date of interview. Alternatively, applicants should possess a CESR / CESR (CP).

Applications from doctors with appropriate specialist training and experience who are not listed on the GMC Specialist Register can be considered for a Locum Consultant post (up to 12 months) if no substantive Consultant appointment is made. Whilst in locum employment, an application to obtain a CESR / CESR (CP) and entry onto the Specialist Register can be made.
