Our client, a trusted partner of the UK’s Ministry of Defence, seeks an experienced Environmental Project Engineer. The role involves serving as a key technical focal point throughout the product life-cycle, from concept definition and development to design aid, formal qualification, and in-service support. Expertise required includes requirements specification and management, data analysis, simulation and modelling, and testing in climatic, mechanical (vibration and shock), structural mechanical, and fatigue environments. As an Environmental Project Engineer, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape product design, manufacturing, and proving processes. This role not only allows for the development of technical skills and the acquisition of experience across our client’s UK portfolio but also provides the chance to engage with senior business leaders, including Project Heads and Chief Engineers, to influence key technical decisions. Key Responsibilities: Work closely with their functions, sectors, and Chief Engineers, including Systems Engineering, Architecture, Design, and Proving teams. Provide technical expertise in generating environmental requirements and developing robust product designs. Define and manage cost-effective test strategies throughout the product development cycle. Collaborate with experienced project and test engineers to define and manage test programs. Serve as a technical focal point for all stages of the product life-cycle, from concept definition to in-service support. Act as a technical interface with customers for the delivery of technical work packages. Plan, deliver, and monitor assigned work packages, making engineering decisions within your sphere of responsibility. Effectively handle multiple issues, tasks, and priorities concurrently across projects. Interact with the customer community at a high level, maintaining the integrity of engineering outputs. Contribute to the EE&F strategy to keep pace with emerging technologies and threats. Additional Skill Responsibilities: Serve as the primary contact for Environmental Engineering technical details from off-site trials, communicating these through dedicated meetings and working groups. Oversee day-to-day activities from project initiation to completion of an environmental test program, including technical calls, management of occurrences/NCRs, documentation updates, progress reviews, and resolution or escalation of technical issues. Provide guidance to the off-site trials facility to ensure compliance with Environmental Proving Requirements, covering equipment usage, instrumentation selection and placement, fixtures and setup, assessment of precursor and work-up runs, and data review for response validity. Assist in troubleshooting unforeseen issues within your area of responsibility and provide solutions to advance trial activities. Manage reporting requirements for the project, including environmental engineering progress, issues, and technical reports to support qualification activities. Communicate areas of concern to the appropriate level of authority within the off-site trials site. Regularly update the business on progress, both programmatic and technical. Review schedules to identify risks and opportunities and escalate these effectively. Travel regularly to the trials site (South East Coast) to support in-person meetings and data reviews with the off-site trials team. What do you need?: Degree-level education or equivalent experience. Proven experience in planning, managing, and delivering small to medium-sized work packages. Expertise in environmental engineering within the defence sector or a relevant industry. Knowledge of vibration, shock, temperature, and humidity environments, and their applicability to various products at different life cycle stages. Understanding of environmental test processes, measurements, and instrumentation. Familiarity with international Environmental Standards (DEF STAN 00-035, AECTP 300, AECTP 400, MIL-STD 810, etc.). Strong analytical skills and excellent problem-solving abilities. Inquisitive nature with a drive for finding solutions. Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
