I'm currently recruiting for a Principal Ecologist / Ornithologist on behalf of an established, independent consultancy known for its pioneering work in the renewable energy sector. This full-time position offers an exciting opportunity to take a leadership role in shaping and delivering ecological input across major infrastructure and renewable projects. The successful candidate will join a collaborative Consenting and Environment Team, supporting projects throughout the full lifecycle - from feasibility and planning to construction and beyond.

Role Overview:

As a Principal Ecologist / Ornithologist, you will provide high-level ecological and ornithological expertise to clients and colleagues, manage and review project deliverables, lead on impact assessments, and support strategic business development. You'll also play a vital role in mentoring junior staff and driving continued growth across the consultancy's portfolio of green energy projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide ecological and ornithological advice across survey design, data analysis, interpretation, and impact assessment.
  • Deliver and review technical documentation including EIAs, ES chapters, HRAs, licence applications, and monitoring plans.
  • Oversee the management of multiple projects, including survey logistics, timelines, and budgets.
  • Lead training and provide guidance to team members where required.
  • Maintain awareness of current best practices, legislation, and guidance relevant to the renewables sector.
  • Build and manage strong relationships with clients, consultees, stakeholders, and industry peers.
  • Support business development activities, including identifying new opportunities and contributing to bids.
  • Represent the company at conferences and industry events.

Education & Qualifications:

  • Educated to degree level in Biology, Ecology, Zoology, or a related discipline, or possess equivalent experience.
  • Relevant professional membership such as CIEEM or IEMA preferred.

Specialist Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong background in ecology and/or ornithology, with experience in survey design, data analysis, and interpretation.
  • Familiarity with the Habitat Regulations and UK planning/permitting processes.
  • Proven knowledge of the onshore renewables sector and environmental support during wind farm construction.
  • Understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain and Development Consent Order (DCO) projects.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strategic thinker with problem-solving initiative and a proactive approach to growth and innovation.
  • Existing network within the renewables industry and with key consultees is highly desirable.

Relevant Experience:

  • Hands-on experience conducting and managing ornithological/ecological surveys for renewable energy projects.
  • Strong project management background, including budget control and resource allocation.
  • Experience producing and reviewing Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), particularly in the offshore wind sector.
  • Proven leadership in training and mentoring junior staff.

Interpersonal & Communication Skills:

  • Excellent communicator with the ability to clearly convey technical advice and project goals.
  • Skilled at managing internal and external relationships.
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to lead and motivate others.

Additional Requirements:

  • A full UK driving licence is required due to the travel demands of the role.
