With the launch of the Women’s Health Strategy in July 2022, the Department of Health (DH) tasked NHS England to deliver specific policy commitments. This post is designed to provide clinical oversight and drive transformation in women’s health care, supporting the NCD and Deputy Director. The main focus will be on secondary care and specialist aspects of gynaecology, including addressing elective care waits, involving collaboration with NHS England teams and external system partners at national, regional, and local levels.
The NHS health and care system serves all populations, with 51% of the population facing obstacles to accessing care. The 2014 Chief Medical Officer’s annual report highlighted widening disparities affecting girls and women during their adolescent, reproductive, and post-reproductive years. These issues remain relevant today.
- Engage with and provide leadership, specialist expertise, direction, and support to the Women’s Health Deputy Director and National Clinical Director, supporting the delivery of the Women’s Health programme.
- Focus mainly on secondary and specialist care pathways for women, including gynaecology elective waits, while working closely with other teams and stakeholders across population health, community, and primary care.
- Provide clinical advice to support the identification and delivery of corporate clinical priorities, support commissioning, offer ad hoc advice, and drive service transformation.
- Support senior leaders by providing clinical advice and leadership through collaboration with programme SROs and clinical leads across the organisation, ensuring alignment with national policies and strategies.
- Maintain knowledge of the latest scientific advances and offer clinical expertise on cross-cutting themes such as digital healthcare and innovation, applying a health inequalities perspective across all work areas.
- Assist policy and strategy teams with horizon scanning and contribute to the design and delivery of interventions and resources to support system, professional, and care pathway changes at national and local levels.
The NHS England Board has outlined the top-level purpose for the organisation: to lead the NHS in England to deliver high-quality services for all. This purpose guides our detailed design work and aims to:
- Enable local systems and providers to improve the health of their populations and reduce health inequalities.
- Make the NHS a great place to work, where staff can make a difference and achieve their potential.
- Collaborate to ensure the healthcare workforce has the necessary knowledge, skills, values, and behaviors to deliver accessible, compassionate care.
- Optimize the use of digital technology, research, and innovation.
- Deliver value for money.
