The Organisation: The George Institute for Global Health is a leading independent global medical research institute with major centres in Australia, China, India, and the UK. The George’s mission is to improve the health of millions of people worldwide, particularly those living in disadvantaged circumstances, by challenging the status quo and using innovative approaches to prevent and treat non-communicable diseases and injury. In Australia, they are closely affiliated with UNSW Sydney and will be based at the UNSW Health Precinct by the end of 2025.

The Opportunity: Based in Sydney, The George is seeking an Executive Director for the Australian leadership team, who will also be a member of the global Executive Leadership Team. This role also includes being one of The George’s Scientific Leads for a global portfolio of research programs. The ED will develop and implement a vision and strategic plan for the long-term sustainable growth of The George Institute Australia, in partnership with its other offices and key collaborators across Australia and more than 40 countries across the world.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Support global Institute development as part of the Executive Leadership Team. Lead strategic planning, people strategy, revenue generation, and long-term growth initiatives.
  • Partnership Development: Strengthen the partnerships with donors, government, universities, and other Medical Research Institutes within Australia and identify cross-regional collaboration opportunities.
  • Financial Performance and Sustainability: Secure funding for large-scale research programmes. Expand relationships to grow philanthropic revenue.
  • Research Leadership: Oversee a portfolio of global research programmes. Provide thought leadership and mentorship for high-quality research and impactful publications.
  • Cultural Leadership: Foster a culture of inclusivity, respect, collaboration, creativity, integrity, and excellence. Attract, develop, and retain world-class talent.

About You:

  • A strong track record as a strategic and inspirational national or international leader in a comparable complex and high-performing environment.
  • Experience in evidence-based advocacy, engagement, and thought leadership activities for policy and systems change.
  • An outstanding international reputation for, or ability to lead, innovative research in non-communicable diseases and injuries (NCDIs).
  • Strong publication record with evidence of impact on knowledge, health, or economic outcomes.
  • Extensive experience in capacity building, training, guiding, and motivating research students and early to mid-career researchers.
  • PhD or equivalent in a relevant health-related discipline.
