At the heart of guiding are the unit meetings that girls attend regularly. Volunteering at these meetings means engaging actively, meeting new people, and running activities that empower girls to realize their potential. You’ll work directly with young people and can choose to support girls of different age groups between 4 and 18 years in Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, or Rangers. Typically, unit meetings occur once a week for about an hour, plus preparation time.
Many new volunteers start as helpers at regular unit meetings. You’ll collaborate with other volunteers to provide fun, friendship, challenge, and adventure for the girls. There’s no responsibility for planning in this role, but you’ll be the extra support needed to run the meetings. Register your interest to learn about helper roles near you.
Experience requiredNo prior guiding experience or extensive time commitment is necessary to make a meaningful difference. Whatever your skills and interests—whether directly supporting girls or working behind the scenes—there’s a role for you.
Travel expensesVolunteers can claim reasonable expenses incurred during their volunteering activities.
SupportAll Girlguiding volunteers receive support to complete our Safeguarding module - A Safe Space - via our online learning platform. The platform also offers optional training modules to help you develop your skills and gain transferable experience.
TasterIf you’re interested in volunteering with girls, our local volunteers can arrange a taster visit to a unit meeting—either at your preferred location or elsewhere. This provides a great opportunity to observe how meetings are run, speak with other volunteers, and gather activity ideas. It’s also a chance to familiarize yourself with different age groups before deciding which one to support.
RestrictionsMinimum age: 18. To ensure safety, anyone over 18 must complete the necessary recruitment and vetting process, including reference and disclosure checks, for the role they wish to undertake.
AvailabilityVolunteering is available on all days of the week, with flexible times: morning, afternoon, or evening.
Frequency & commitmentUnit meetings typically occur once a week for about an hour, plus prep time. If a weekly commitment isn’t possible, you can still support in other ways. Volunteers aged 18-25 may also claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
