Engineering Lead (Payments)

Our consultancy client is working with a major bank on the development of their faster payments gateway. We are seeking an engineering lead to guide the development of a cloud-hosted, microservices-based payment system. You should have extensive experience in payments, be technically hands-on, and possess significant technical leadership experience within a modern Agile delivery environment. You will work closely with the testing lead to ensure the delivery of robust, scalable, and secure software solutions.

Your responsibilities include leading the design and delivery of complex software projects in the Payments domain, and driving the implementation of cloud-based microservices using Spring Boot and other modern frameworks. You will champion Agile methodologies, lead sprints, retrospectives, and planning sessions to ensure continuous delivery, and embed automation along with CI/CD pipelines into daily workflows to ensure high-quality, repeatable releases. You will provide technical mentorship to a team of engineers across multiple initiatives, align with product management and stakeholders to meet business goals and timelines, and focus on long-term improvements in engineering strategy, operational processes, and team resilience. You will report to the overall Lab Engineering Lead and Payments Platform Lead.

Essential requirements include hands-on experience in developing and scaling payment or transaction-heavy banking platforms, proficiency in Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and microservice architecture. A strong understanding of cloud platforms (e.g., GCP, Azure), cloud-native patterns, CI/CD, DevOps automation, and infrastructure-as-code principles is also necessary.

This role can be based in London or Edinburgh, requiring presence in the office 2-3 days per week. The position is inside IR35.
