An experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (electro-mechanical electrical / mechanical engineer) is urgently required to be part of a growing R&D team for a novel technology STEM organisation. As a senior mechanical design engineer, you will use your mechanical design engineering and electrical expertise to lead and develop new system designs (equipment / machinery) concepts and technology solutions from idea through to commercially viable solutions for the business.
Key Responsibilities
- To lead mechanical & electrical engineering activities to support the detailed design and development of machinery / systems equipment.
- To support communications with company internal teams (specifically the team in the US) including any contracted engineers to create functional solutions to project requirements.
- To work with suppliers in the design, manufacture and delivery of production line components.
- To lead work on prototyping and design verification testing to support design & development of mechanical designs, optimization, cost reduction and quality improvement.
- To design and deliver appropriate approaches to design verification, prototyping, materials selection and testing.
- To integrate new technologies into new production lines and potential new product development, as well as fault-finding / improvement / enhancement on existing products and systems.
- To assist with the design, development and operation of the company’s existing UK pilot line.
- To work and interact with other skillsets in science and engineering to optimize production line manufacturability, cost and quality.
Qualifications And Experience
- Degree-educated e.g. (i.e. Mechanical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design with electrical understanding etc).
- An excellent understanding of commercial mechanical technology / systems / equipment designing for future trends/ technologies.
- Knowledge requirements: General Mechanical engineering knowledge; BoM structure; Drawing construction and control; Operation Manuals; Safety requirements and machinery directive; CE requirements; ATEX; HAZOP implementation; GA Drawings; P&ID Drawings; Flow Diagrams; One line Diagrams; PLC Logic; Document Registers.
- Useful experience with these Mechanical Systems: Gearboxes, Motors and Drives, Ductwork, Heaters, Pumps, Fluid dynamics, Heat exchangers, Instrumentation.
- Very desirable Electrical Systems: knowledge of Electrical systems, Cables and cable runs, Drives, PLC, Wonderware or other Automation, Web based controls.
- Proficient in CAD (ideally Solidworks & Navisworks Certified or similar).
- Desirable: Knowledge and experience in the drafting and delivery of mechanical and electrical drawings (e.g.: P&IDs, Process Flow Diagrams, Electrical One Line Diagrams, Service Connection Drawings etc.).
- Hands-on development of working prototypes through to validation of commercial systems.
- Experience in managing numerous external partners: from initiating technical briefs and requirements, remote problem solving, managing updates and reporting progress to the broader team and leadership.
- Understanding of project timescales and how the role contributes to the broader R&D innovation pipeline.
- Familiar with ISO 9001 Quality Management System and its associated processes.
- Experience with machinery design specifically for use in explosive environments (ATEX) and have background knowledge and experience with Hazard & Operability Studies (HAZOPs).
- Working knowledge of industrial standards (e.g.: ISO, IEC, ASME/ASTM) and regulations.
- Working knowledge of machinery control systems, including PLC/HMI concepts, 3-phase motors and VFDs.
- Familiar with the EPC document approval process (submittals, review, comments, and revision).
