The predicted salary is between 30000 - 42000 £ per year.

Due to internal movement, we have the opportunity for a Speech and Language Therapist to join our team at QEHB on a fixed-term basis for 12 months. The role would be suitable for an NQP, a current SLT looking for a new challenge or a student SLT qualifying soon.

The successful candidate would work alongside peers in a rotational role across several specialities including medicine, stroke, neuro-trauma, oncology, healthcare for older people, respiratory and specialist surgery. Our SLTs benefit from a robust supervision structure alongside innovation, participation in research and clinical/professional development being encouraged. You would be part of a well-established team which also benefits from SLT led Videofluoroscopy and FEES services.

The successful candidate would work within the acute SLT team at QEHB serving a diverse clinical caseload. You would work closely with the SLT Team Leaders, Specialist SLTs and Band 5 SLT peers to provide an excellent level of care to our patient group. The role is rotational on a 9 monthly basis and is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Edgbaston Birmingham.

Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Attending internal and external training to develop your clinical skills
  • Assessing and managing patients with dysphagia and communication disorders
  • Working closely with the MDT
  • Supervision responsibilities for SLT Assistants and students as appropriate
  • Working flexibly and thriving in a fast-paced, acute environment

We have a large team who share a caseload of diverse patient cohorts so being a team player is essential. We would welcome a candidate who has experience working with patients in the specialist areas, but our supportive team will be willing to support your development.

Person specification

Qualifications:

  • BSc or recognised MSc degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • Membership of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
  • Registration with HCPC, or due to have within 3 months of interview.

Experience:

  • Experience of working, or clinical SLT placement, with an adult caseload.
  • Experience of working successfully as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Experience of working or clinical placement with adult dysphagia caseload.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of assessment and management of dysphagia, dysarthria, dyspraxia, dysphonia, and dysphasia.
  • Membership of a relevant Clinical Excellence Network (CEN).
  • Experience of holding own clinical caseload.
  • Experience of working within the NHS.

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate sensitive and complex information effectively.
  • An awareness of the appropriate use of counselling skills.
  • Excellent skills of persuasion, motivation, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication skills with people who have significant and complex communication and or swallowing difficulties.
  • Systematic and organised.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Keen to embrace change and work flexibly to support the patient caseload and wider team.
  • Punctual and reliable.
  • Ability to use required IT systems effectively.
  • Ability to work weekends as part of a 7 day working pattern (when appropriate service delivery allows and commences).
  • Ability and passion to be involved with service development.
  • Ability to communicate in more than one language (e.g. bilingual).
