The Authorising (Fire) Engineer is responsible for supporting healthcare organisations with fire safety compliance and management in accordance with HTM 05-01 guidelines. This role involves overseeing fire safety strategies, providing expert recommendations, monitoring performance, and conducting annual audits. The ideal candidate will possess significant healthcare fire safety experience and the ability to manage relationships between clients and contractors, contributing to the success of the organisation by ensuring compliance with industry regulations and fostering best practices.

General Responsibilities

  • Compliance and Policy Support: Assist clients with fire safety compliance and policy decisions in healthcare establishments.
  • Audits and Assessments: Conduct audits on client suppliers and contractors to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations.
  • Recommendations and Solutions: Provide clients with solutions to fire safety issues identified in surveys and assessments.
  • Project Management: Oversee projects from enquiry through to invoicing, ensuring appropriate contribution levels.
  • Quotation Management: Organise formal quotations through a pool of accredited subcontractors.
  • Site Visits: Conduct site visits for initial pricing, pre-start meetings, progress meetings, and project sign-offs.
  • Report Writing: Write detailed audit and completion reports.
  • Relationship Management: Foster good working relationships with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Commercial Awareness: Work towards achieving set financial targets and contribute to the business’s growth.
  • Continuous Improvement: Implement and promote continuous improvement practices in fire safety management.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Fire Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least 5 years of experience in fire safety engineering, with significant experience in healthcare settings. Chartered Engineer or a Member of the Institution of Fire Engineers or the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management (or similar).
  • Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of HTM 05-01 guidelines, Building Regulations, Fire Safety Engineering, and legislative fire safety.
  • Skills: Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in using fire safety design software and other relevant tools.

Additional Requirements

  • At least two years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Extremely passionate about fire safety.
  • Confident communicator with good customer service skills.
  • Self-motivated, able to prioritise and work on own initiative, as well as following instructions and working as part of a team.
  • Numerate, and organised with attention to detail.
  • Professional appearance and behaviour.
  • Reliable, punctual, honest, and trustworthy.
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly with regards to Microsoft Word / Outlook and Bluebeam.
