The Role

Support Worker – Communication (SSE) and Administration

37 hours per week (8.30am-4.30pm), 39 weeks term time

Fixed term role (rolling based on ATW funding)

Actual salary of £22,518pa (based on a FTE of £25,589pa)

Are you Level 3 BSL trained, able to support SSE communication to support a Deaf adult worker? We’re recruiting for a new role to support one of our Deaf staff at the academy for a fixed term role initially until September 2025 but likely to continue as funding through Access to Work is confirmed. This is a support worker role for our Work Related Learning Coordinator in our College, to enable this member of staff to access communication with other staff, students and stakeholders and support with administration and note taking in their role.

You’ll have a Level 3 BSL qualification and experience in an administrative role. You’ll be a confident user of IT programmes (PowerPoint, Excel, Word), and have a good level of literacy to support with creating and reviewing documents and reports. This role will also include telephone communication support in contacting external companies. The role is mainly office based but will also involve travel to work placement locations, providing communication support whilst offsite for the Work Placement Coordinator.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide support to a Deaf worker to enable them to access communication with other staff and students within college / post-19
  • Be able to work on own initiative, but with supervision and support
  • Accompany the staff member on activities, work experience placement visits, or trips
  • Maintain current and accurate records of support work at all times

Key Requirements:

  • A minimum of BSL Level 3 qualification is required
  • A CSW qualification is desirable, or experience in an administrative role
  • Level 2 Maths and English (GCSE A*-C)
  • Experience with communication support for a deaf person/learner
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and community
  • Good communication skills, whether written or oral
  • Ability to liaise with curriculum and support staff at the academy
  • Empathetic and very patient with a supportive attitude to support staff and students
  • Reliable and hardworking
  • Ability to form and maintain appropriate relationships and personal boundaries with children and young adults
