The individual is an 18-year-old male who sustained a brain injury as a baby, is a wheelchair user, and has complex behavioural, cognitive, and physical needs. He is described by those who know him best as 'a real character', funny, cheeky, and determined. He is sociable with a great sense of humour but can get anxious when trying new things or going to new places; it can take him a little while to get used to new people. When anxious, he may not always react appropriately, but when at ease, he can be very good company.

He needs help with personal care and transfers, but his physio and current Support Workers are helping him to get stronger and learn new skills. He would like support to transition to his new adult placement three days a week, after being collected and taken home, and would like help with food preparation.

He also seeks support for two days a week to access community facilities, experience social and leisure activities, engage in therapy, and further develop life skills. He enjoys being active and busy, loves playing games (especially bingo), singing karaoke, and anything food-related. He enjoys being outdoors and would like to try bowling, eating out, and other similar activities. Although he requires a lot of support, he loves being as independent as possible and enjoys helping with domestic and household tasks.

The ideal support team should be enthusiastic, fun, patient, and reliable, helping him manage personal care and engage as independently as possible in the activities he loves. Team members need to be calm and patient under pressure, able to apply a consistent approach, and work well as a team.

To join as a Support Worker/Therapy Assistant, you will:

  • Be able to drive and have use of a car.
  • Be willing to drive his van.
  • Have experience working with young adults.
  • Enjoy working as part of a multidisciplinary team.

(This role would be an excellent opportunity for a therapy student or psychology graduate.) A full induction and training will be provided. This role is subject to an Enhanced level DBS check.
