Shift Leader pay starts from £14.76 per hour; this increases to £15.97 for stores inside the M25. Additional payments may apply depending on location.
New colleagues joining Tesco are offered a minimum of 16 guaranteed hours each week. If you prefer to work fewer hours (to a minimum of 12), we have opportunities and would love to hear from you.
The period of time in the week we’d like you to be available to work is shown above. We will schedule your contracted hours within these times, and you will have 3 weeks’ notice of your exact shifts. We aim to support flexibility; if your available times closely match but do not exactly match, we’d still love to hear from you.

Role summary
It takes a lot of great people to run a store, and it takes a great Shift Leader to support them all and keep things running smoothly. You’ll oversee the store from the shop floor, help customers, and strive to improve service for customers, colleagues and communities every day.
As a Shift Leader you’ll
- Work in a fast-paced retail environment, with variety
- Own the running of duty shifts, coordinating the team to deliver a clean, well-stocked store that exceeds customer expectations
- Be available for customers, listening to their needs and helping them find what they came for
- Look for ways to improve service, including coaching colleagues and providing feedback
- Guide and support colleagues in-store, maintaining a safe place to work and shop
- Understand store performance and assist managers in actions to improve operations
- Lead from the front and set a great example for colleagues

You will be responsible for
- Coordinating the store team to deliver an easy, fuss-free shopping experience
- Supporting colleagues to deliver daily priorities and take breaks
- Opening and closing the store and completing duty cover, ensuring safety
- Being the go-to person in the absence of a manager for day-to-day queries
- Keeping the store clean, tidy, and well-presented
- Supporting managers with seasonal, community and charity events
- Contributing to a great, inclusive team atmosphere
- Providing great customer service by listening to customers
- Keeping the team informed of communications, changes, or updates
- Staying knowledgeable about store performance and looking for improvements
- Coordinating store improvements and removing obstacles to service
- Following health and safety routines and ensuring colleagues do the same
- Recognising and celebrating colleagues providing great service
