We are looking for an experienced and motivated Senior Children’s Nurse. If you are a highly skilled clinical nurse with a proven record in effectively leading teams, read on. You will provide clinical leadership for the Skylark and Paediatric Assessment Unit team.

Leading for Quality Improvement, you will co-create and deliver Quality Improvement initiatives across children’s services. Striving to ensure all children receive consistently high standards of safe, innovative care, you will share key messages from learning and lead the implementation of actions to improve practice. You will collaborate with a range of stakeholders including the PED team to deliver co-produced quality improvements.

Recruitment, retention, and pastoral care are key parts of the matron role. We understand the vital role a positive learning environment plays in enabling teams to deliver high-quality care. You will lead the development of strategies to retain and nurture current staff including professional development and effective support programs.

Our Matron will be a strong clinical leader, highly visible and accessible to patients, families, and staff. You will work with children and their families to develop services that meet their needs, building on our work with Young Healthwatch. You will work closely with our Head of Nursing and colleagues across the CYP team. We will support you to develop your leadership skills further as part of your induction and ongoing support package.

Main duties of the job:

  • Professional lead and role model demonstrating advanced knowledge of the field of Children and Young People services.
  • Professionally lead, non-medical healthcare professionals and personnel within a designated specialty enabling them to exercise professional judgment within a framework of accountability and governance.
  • Responsible for the operational management and professional leadership of a defined group of clinical areas and their staff.
  • Promote, lead, and influence the provision of direct and indirect patient care and service delivery relating to patient flow through development, education, and research within CYP.
  • Responsible for the quality of the patient environment and lead on facilitating changes that improve patient experience.
  • Be a highly visible and approachable leader to staff, patients, carers, families, and the public ensuring open channels of communication are created and sustained.
  • As part of the corporate senior nursing team, work in partnership to define, deliver, and monitor the Nursing and Midwifery Strategy.
  • Work with a wide range of professionals and agencies to deliver an effective patient-centered service within a defined area/field of specialism.
  • Play a key operational role and maintain a proactive approach to managing patient flow.
  • Provide professional leadership for recruitment and retention.
  • Deputise for the Head of Nursing CYP as required.

Person specification:

  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent level of education, training, or experience.
  • NMC Registered Children’s Nurse.
  • Teaching and assessing Qualification.
  • Considerable experience of leadership at Senior Ward Sister / Charge Nurse or equivalent experience level.
  • Management/Leadership Qualification.
  • Aware of the NHS Agenda, national directives, and all governance aspects of Health care.
  • Master’s Degree/ Working towards.

Knowledge:

  • Leadership of Clinical Governance and patient safety.
  • Experience of data analysis and audit evaluation.
  • Ability to manage traumatic/distressing incidents/scenes.
  • Ability to work on change management projects.

Skills:

  • Experience of developing constructive multi-disciplinary working.
  • Demonstrated experience of high-level communication, including networking skills.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and prioritise work.
  • Highly developed skills of persuasion, motivational, negotiating, and communication.
  • Fine motor skills to perform clinical procedures.
