Biomedical Scientist – Microbiology Speciality King Edward VII Memorial Hospital The King Edward VII Memorial Hospital is looking for an experienced Biomedical Scientist with Microbiology as their main discipline to be the Microbiology Lead in a friendly and supportive team which provides excellent care for patients and clients. The King Edward VII Memorial Hospital is the principal healthcare facility in the Falkland Islands, providing primary care and a broad range of elective and emergency secondary care services as well as providing Food and Water testing for various industries within the Islands. The hospital is well equipped with ambitious plans being developed to expand and upgrade facilities, located in a vibrant and unique community situated in the South Atlantic surrounded by stunning natural environment. You would be working in a multidisciplinary laboratory where you would be expected to participate in the out of hours On-Call system which averages to one week out of three being On-Call. As the Microbiology lead the post holder will be responsible for quality and improvements within the Microbiology discipline processes and would assist also in both Food, Water & Environmental section and Blood Sciences section. The food and water testing section of the laboratory is required to work to standards listed in ISO 17025 and is essential to Falkland Islands’ Fish and Meat export industry and this role plays a part in delivering accreditation of this service provision. As a multi-skilled Senior Biomedical Scientist, the post holder will be part of a team that provides a high quality clinical diagnostic pathology service that meets appropriate standards (ISO 15189) and will take part in the provision of the of the multi-disciplinary pathology On-Call rota. You will be expected to contribute to the in-house training of staff and general progression of the laboratory skills mix. Ideally the applicant will have specialist level experience in Microbiology with some experience in Haematology and Biochemistry. Training in the other disciplines covered in the lab will provided to the successful applicant to a level that is adequate for the provision of routine and out of hours testing services. A BSc in Biomedical Sciences or related subject An Institute of Biomedical Science Specialist Diploma is desirable but not essential At least 3 years’ experience working in a clinical laboratory Experience of working with LIMS systems within a laboratory framework A gratuity (lump sum payment) on completion of the contract term equivalent to 25% of the total base salary value of the contract excluding the market supplement. A relocation allowance to help with moving costs. Free flights for the employee and dependants at the beginning and end of the contract plus additional annual return flights after the first year. Paid leave of 41 days comprising 30 days of annual leave and 11 days of public/government holidays. Good quality furnished accommodation at reasonable subsidised rental rates.
