We have a 6 month FTC Season Position available for a General Labourer/Gardener within the Parks and Open Spaces Department at Onchan District Commissioners. The position is to assist the Parks Foreman in carrying out duties including general gardening and landscape maintenance in various locations within the Onchan District, including areas such as Onchan Pleasure Park, Port Jack Glen, Playing Fields, Open Spaces and other properties belonging to the Authority.

DUTIES

  • Undertake general maintenance with minimal supervision to complete tasks which include mowing, strimming, hedge trimming, weeding, planting, litter collection, fallen leaves collection and gulley emptying.
  • Use of and daily maintenance of various hand tools, power tools, and plant which will include tractor mounted equipment and ride on mowers.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  • Collection and delivery of supplies where necessary.
  • Landscaping.
  • Interdepartmental working as required if necessary.
  • Any other duties of a similar level of responsibility as may be required from time to time by the Environmental and Technical Manager.

EQUIPMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

All tools, equipment and materials required to be used by the post will be supplied by the Authority or where necessary hired. The use of such items is non-exhaustive and any training which is identified will be supplied where appropriate. It is the responsibility of the post holder to ensure the equipment is maintained and in good working order with any faults reported.

  • Hand tools, pedestrian mowers, strimmers, saw, hedge cutters, blowers, ride on mowers, tractors and attachments and sprayers.
  • Vans, Pick up vehicles, towed equipment, plant trailers, water bowsers and chippers which belong to the Authority, with restriction by driving licence category applied to the towing of vehicles.

The post holder will on a daily basis be in contact with members of the public within the districts parks and open spaces. The post holder will work alongside their supervisor.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL

  • A full and valid driving licence
  • Experience in general labouring activities which might include low level tree work, fencing and street scene activities
  • Able to lift and carry heavy items of plant and able to undertake duties on foot
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Understanding of confidentiality and requirements of Data Protection legislation
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Positive work attitude
  • Ability to foster good working relationships at all levels
  • Commitment to excellent customer service
  • Ability to work on own initiative with minimum supervision

DESIRABLE

  • Experience in the use of pedestrian mowers and strimmers
  • Valid NPTC Certificate in the safe use of pesticide PA1 & PA6
