Are you looking for a fun and varied job in hospitality management? YHA Borrowdale are looking for a Duty Manager to join their team! YHA Borrowdale is an exceptional hostel located in the heart of the Borrowdale Valley, deep in the centre of the lovely Lake District. We house 97 people in our little wooden abode, with camping and pods on site too. We have a lively bar here that gets busy most evenings and a large team as we are open all year round. If you are a walker/climber/runner/general outdoors folk/nature lover this position will be great for you, as there is instant access to the fells right from the front door, and we are nestled in one of the only patches of protected temperate rain forests in England. Great job, great location. We work hard and enjoy the outdoors.
As a Duty Manager you’ll support the Hostel Manager with the day-to-day management of the hostel. You’ll create a great place for our teams to work and ensure our guests have a great experience in our hostels.

What will you be doing as a Duty Manager?
We are a friendly team and will provide the training required for you to undertake the role. However, there is plenty for you to get stuck into from day one, including:
- Guiding and supporting team members working in all areas of the hostel, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
- Using our systems for efficient guest check-ins and check-outs, food and beverage sales and service and other management functions.
- Carrying out housekeeping duties, ensuring a comfortable, clean environment for all visitors.
- Assisting in the preparation of food and serving food and drinks with genuine warmth, hospitality, and pride that will influence in more sales.
- Deputising for the Hostel/Deputy Manager, managing the daily hostel operation in their absence.
What Skills and Experience do you need to be a Duty Manager?
Our Duty Managers are responsible for the line management of the teams within their own hostels, along with the management of occasional volunteers. They are also responsible for managing the operational budget and the safeguarding of all guests. To provide this service we are looking for candidates who have:
- Experience of working face-to-face with customers
- Experience in hospitality or customer service, including the management and delivery of a quality service
- Experience of managing a team – experience of leading others, providing guidance to members of your team (desirable)
- Food safety level 2 and APLH level 2 qualifications (desirable)
- Ability to manage varying pressures, include peaks in workload demands – can prioritise, able to deal with conflicting duties
- Basic IT skills (ideally Microsoft Office) – able to use Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel
- Knowledge and understanding of the core purpose of YHA – what YHA does and how we do it
