To work within our Projects department, you will be responsible for the end-to-end delivery of projects related to wastewater treatment systems, including civil, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and automation elements. This often includes projects under AMP (Asset Management Period) frameworks for water utilities.
Typical Projects You May Manage:
- Wastewater treatment site upgrades
- Improving or replacing existing assets across all areas of process, including:
- Biological Treatment
- Aeration
- Filtration
- Settlement
- Flow measurement
- Pumping Stations
- Screening
- Chemical dosing and mixing
- Storm Storage
- Spill/pollution/flood mitigation
- Associated PLC/SCADA system integration works including hardware and software replacements and upgrades.
Responsibilities:
- Project Delivery: Manage multiple projects across the design, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases. Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to quality standards.
- Stakeholder Management: Act as the main point of contact between the client (e.g., Thames Water, Severn Trent), contractors, consultants, and regulatory bodies. Manage communication with all relevant stakeholders to ensure suitability and operability of delivered solutions.
- Technical Oversight: Maintain an overview and responsibility for all engineering disciplines - Mechanical, Electrical, ICA, and Civils in terms of both design and project delivery. Review and approve General Arrangement drawings, Control Philosophies, P&IDs, process flow diagrams, functional design specifications, PLC/SCADA designs, etc.
- Safety, Health, Environment & Quality (SHEQ): Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations, ISO 45001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001. Champion a strong safety culture across sites.
- Financial Management: Manage project budgets and forecasts. Submit Early Warning Notices and Compensation Events as appropriate. Approve variations and ensure cost control.
- Construction & Commissioning: Coordinate installation, commissioning, and handover of assets. Preparation of documentation packs including RAMS, Programmes, construction phase plans, specifications, and schedules. Ensure all required documentation is in place. Resolve site challenges and technical issues during construction.
Skills and Experience:
Essential:
- Experience in water and/or wastewater treatment processes.
- A strong background in Mechanical, Electrical, ICA, or Civils engineering in water/wastewater environments with an ability and willingness to understand and manage all disciplines.
- Understanding of Water Industry Standards (WIMES).
- Knowledge of construction contracts (e.g., NEC3/4).
- Experience with risk, quality, and change management.
- Stakeholder and multidisciplinary team management.
- Excellent planning and organisational skills, with attention to detail.
- CSCS Card.
- Full Driving License.
Desirable:
- APM, PRINCE2, or PMP certification.
- IOSH Managing Safely, SMSTS, or NEBOSH certification.
- An industry applicable ONC/HNC/B.Eng or NVQ equivalent.
- Experience delivering projects for water PLC companies (e.g., Southern, Thames, Anglian, Yorkshire, United Utilities).
