The Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for England and Wales (ICLR) is looking for a barrister or solicitor to work in its reporter team, based on Chancery Lane and at the Royal Courts of Justice in London. ICLR is the specialist publisher of the official Law Reports and the Weekly Law Reports. ICLR publishes law reports for all cases in England and Wales which are assessed as reportable, along with the transcripts of all monitored judgments, and is a legal charity set up in 1865 specifically for this purpose. The law reporter role provides the core value-add for the work of ICLR and involves monitoring cases, assessing judgments for reportability, creating metadata for all assessed judgments, drafting law reports for cases selected as reportable and providing further intelligence on these decisions and outputs as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Liaising with manager and other members of court team to ensure all courts and judgments are covered.
- Following hearings of potentially reportable cases in the Royal Courts of Justice or elsewhere to take notes of legal argument and ex tempore judgments.
- Reading judgments to decide whether of sufficient importance to be reported.
- Enhancing and indexing case records for all allocated judgments.
- Making recommendations and decisions on reportability based on the application of the Lindley Principles as informed by current ICLR editorial policy and best practice.
- Writing clear, accurate and concise case summaries of more important judgments.
- Drafting full reports for publication in ICLR services including The Weekly Law Reports, Industrial Cases Reports, Business Law Reports and Public and Third Sector Law Reports.
- Editing judgments to be reported so as to put them into ICLR style and correct errors.
- Proof-reading proofs of reports.
- Communicating with judges and judges’ clerks concerning judges’ approval of law report proofs.
- Covering for other members of court team during absence or as otherwise required.
- Supporting colleagues in EPG with the enrichment and processing of case content.
- Supporting Product and Marketing with the repurposing and communication of case coverage and law reports.
- Representing the standards and values of ICLR and maintaining positive relationships with key external stakeholders including judges, judges’ clerks, representing lawyers, and staff involved in case and court management.
Competencies / Experience
- Current member of the Bar of England and Wales, or solicitor on the roll of solicitors in England and Wales in good professional standing.
- Ability to understand and analyse complex legal judgments.
- Excellent written English.
- Ability to synthesise and express both factual and legal concepts clearly, concisely and accurately.
- Accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to work to schedules, managing and prioritising large volumes of varied work to meet deadlines.
- Problem-solving skills.
- Self-starter, able to work autonomously as well as part of a team.
- Technically competent in core Microsoft Office and related applications.
