Our client is a fast-growing utility group who provide engineering services to the energy transition and utilities sector. They deliver renewable energy grid connection, battery storage, distribution network and utility construction projects across the UK.

The group are currently expanding their teams to deliver the increase in work from frameworks and growing customers in the electricity grid sector. We are supporting them to identify an experienced Design Manager to help design and develop substation infrastructure in the UK.

In this role, you will lead a design team in delivering critical substation infrastructure (11-132kV) for the regulated DNO market. You'll bring your electrical or civil engineering expertise to manage projects from concept to completion.

Key responsibilities:

  • Direct a talented team of 10 electrical designers and technicians
  • Lead design works from initial development through construction
  • Coordinate preparation of detailed design packages
  • Ensure compliance with regulations and standards
  • Manage sub-consultants for specialized work packages
  • Lead Principal Design matters in line with CDM 2015
  • Conduct feasibility studies and site investigations
  • Provide expert technical advice to stakeholders
  • Prioritize workloads and optimize resource allocation
  • Develop accurate quotations for design and feasibility work
  • Manage project budgets and track financial performance
  • Support construction teams with rapid technical response
  • Champion safety-by-design principles
  • Stay current with regulatory changes in the sector

The ideal person:

  • BSc or MSc degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering or a related engineering field.
  • Proven experience designing infrastructure projects from a civil or electrical engineering design
  • Technical expertise in substation design
  • Commercial awareness and budget management skills
  • Chartered Engineer status (or working toward it)
  • Strong collaboration and communication abilities
  • Team leadership capabilities
