Wage/Salary: £18.20 gross per hour | £200.20 Gross per Shift

Essential: Keen to learn new skills and participate in client specific training. You must be diligent, calm and have a genuine passion to assist and support others.

Desirable: Epilepsy / seizure management training and experience.

Start Date: ASAP

Days & Hours: 2 or 3 nights available per week, 9.00pm to 8.00am.

Accommodation: Small, comfortable room / office space next to Tom’s bedroom with large screen video monitor in place.

About our client: It is our pleasure to introduce Tom, aged 30. Tom is mobile, and with watchful support, he can enjoy regular physical activities such as triking, bowling and soft archery. Some of his other interests include going out for lunch/coffee, days at the beach, cinema/theatre, art, listening to music, attending church and being around his friends. Tom has a rare genetic condition, and as a result has drug resistant epilepsy and learning difficulties. He requires 2:1 support during waking hours, and 1:1 while asleep, physical support with personal care and all areas of his daily life, due to the severity of his epilepsy.

Overview of role: Tom is typically settling down and in bed by 9.00pm and will drift off to sleep by himself with his Waking Night Carer observing and monitoring his movements through the video monitor screen in the adjoining room. The set-up to monitor Tom is excellent; you can zoom in to see him clearly. Tom will have seizures throughout the night so the Waking Night Carer must be extremely vigilant, and calm under pressure. When Tom comes out of his seizure(s), he is repositioned so that he can breathe freely and is monitored etc. all practical aspects to keep him safe. He also requires gentle reassurance and comfort. Tom’s parents are on hand if assistance is required, you will ring an alarm connected to their bedroom to alert that additional support is required. Tom is usually gently woken up in the morning, his seizures and their unpredictability and fluctuation determine how the next day is going to be for Tom. Most mornings he has breakfast in bed and enjoys drinking his coffee listening to Classic FM.

Who this job would suit: A highly organised, conscientious, and detail-oriented person comfortable working waking night shifts on a predominately sole charge basis. Possessing the right kind of mindset; being gentle and diligent in their approach, and excited about learning. Experience is highly desirable, however due to the training and induction, the right person for this role may have limited seizure management or limited care experience.

What’s great about this job: Tom and his warrior family for one! Plus, excellent, bespoke Epilepsy training and ongoing support from ‘team Tom’ and other medical and healthcare professionals – genuinely an incredible opportunity.
