There is an opportunity at Thurso Lifeboat Station for a Station Technician/Senior Station Technician to join the team. This would suit someone whose mechanical expertise, resilience, leadership, and management skills are as strong as their ability to keep Thurso Lifeboat in perfect operational order.

Your role
The role of Senior Station Technician is for individuals with an NVQ L4/SVQ L5 in an engineering discipline or equivalent experience in mechanical, electrical, or electronic engineering. If these qualifications are not held, a Station Technician role may be offered.
You will ensure the Lifeboat is in optimal condition and manage the day-to-day operations of the station. You will also train volunteer crew members to ensure preparedness for emergencies.
Your responsibilities include:
- Inspiring and motivating your team, supporting their development, and conducting training.
- Engaging with the public about the station’s work.
- Leading on Quality, Safety, Health, and Environment issues.
- Managing daily station operations, including communication and record-keeping.
About you
You should be able to build effective relationships, hold or be willing to obtain relevant qualifications, and demonstrate a proactive attitude towards learning and development. Personal motivation, problem-solving skills, and high interpersonal skills are essential.
To qualify for this role, you need:
- Experience with marine diesel engines and an engineering background.
- Leadership and management qualities.
- The potential to be qualified as an RNLI ALB Afloat Mechanic.
- Experience as a Lifeboat Mechanic or similar role, with willingness to develop skills in other seagoing duties.
Maritime mechanical skills from other industries are applicable, and training is available to adapt your existing skills.

This is an emergency response role. Candidates must live within a reasonable distance from the station and be prepared to respond to a pager 24/7 while on duty.
