Our client is a Tier 1 D&B Contractor operating predominately in the water industry, who are recruiting for a Mechanical Engineering Lead to help deliver the flagship Cambridge Relocation Project for Anglian Water.

The Cambridge relocation project is the design & build of a modern, low carbon waste water treatment plant to provide vital services for the community and environment which will recycle water and nutrients, produce green energy and help Greater Cambridge to grow sustainably. Known as the Cambridge Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) Relocation Project, Anglian Water will work with their partners to help deliver this fantastic opportunity for the Greater Cambridgeshire area.

The relocation would make the site of the existing WWTP available to form part of the development of a new low-carbon city district, known as North East Cambridge. The site at Cowley Road, is Cambridge's last major brownfield site, and the wider North East Cambridge district proposals envisage creating around 8,350 homes and 15,000 jobs over the next 20 years.

As an instrumental member of the Engineering Leadership Team you will report directly to the Engineering Director and adopt the role of lead technical authority for mechanical engineering aspects of the project. You will provide engineering technical direction to the mechanical discipline engineers and ensure an effective team is maintained to integrate all mechanical design elements across all zones & phases of the scheme and ensure right first-time functionality through design, construction, commissioning and takeover.

You will also provide design support for the Cambridge Relocation Project as required and ensure all designs are fit for purpose and meet current legislation and standards. You will be responsible for the checking and reviewing of mechanical deliverables produced by other mechanical engineers and the supply chain to ensure that processes and procedures are followed. You will be required to coach and mentor junior and less experienced members of the mechanical engineering team.

You will collaborate with key stakeholders and assist the multi-disciplinary project teams to ensure the project solution is providing best value for business through being fit for purpose and completed on time, to budget, and to the correct quality.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop the mechanical design team to develop industry leading engineering design and solutions.
  • Be a key member of the Engineering Leadership team (ELT) reporting directly to the Engineering Director.
  • Work collaboratively alongside other ELT members and with the Project Management Team, Design Managers, Design Leads, Design Team Members, Construction Team and all key stakeholders to deliver best value solutions.
  • Develop new ways of working to reduce carbon, increase biodiversity, address climate change, and embrace innovations and new digital technologies.
  • Grow your professional internal and external networks with a multitude of partners.
  • Assist in appointment of specialist contractors and management of the specialist contractors design team contracts to cost, time, quality & safety requirements.
  • Assist in the creation of the project design management plan and ensure all members of the design team are aware of their responsibilities.
  • Manage the production and co-ordination of the mechanical design programme and design deliverables schedule throughout the project.
  • Ensure by working with the project planner, that all mechanical design deliverables are integrated within the construction programme.
  • Manage the delivery of the mechanical design in accordance with the design management plan and design brief, including client requirements, cost, programme, best practice design standards, design responsibilities, BIM strategy and contract agreement.
  • Ensure the mechanical design complies with Client brief, contract, current legislation, Development Consent Order, building regulations, CDM and relevant technical requirements.
  • Lead buildability, risk, opportunity and value engineering reviews.
  • Ensure BIM Execution Plan & CAD protocol are maintained.

Skills, Qualifications & Experience:

  • An engineering Degree or equivalent.
  • Preferably chartered, or working towards, chartered status.
  • Demonstrate a level of competence in practical mechanical engineering in the water / wastewater industry environment.
  • Experience of mentoring and coaching of junior engineers.
  • Experience of designing multi-disciplinary water industry capital projects, from solution to detailed design.
  • An experienced manager of people and teams, developing others, and managing staff welfare.
  • Experience, or a strong understanding of construction, procurement, and commissioning.
  • Proven record in delivering design projects to program, budget, and quality requirements, and managing competing tensions.
  • Proven ability to manage designer's responsibilities under CDM.
  • Experience of Wastewater and Sludge Treatment Centres.
