Stoke City Football Club of the English Football League is looking for an Academy Medical Lead to support its academy medical operations primarily based at Clayton Wood Training Ground. The successful applicant will report to the Academy Technical Director and the first team medical department and will be responsible for leading, facilitating and developing provisions of all physiotherapy services to players in the Academy as well as promoting and protecting the health and wellbeing of all Academy players.

Main Responsibilities

  • Updating the Academy Technical Director and Professional Development Phase staff daily on rehabilitation stages of injured players to aid planning of training and games.
  • Providing a full and comprehensive medical and physiotherapy service for all Academy players from Foundation Phase to U23s.
  • Coordinating physiotherapy and medical cover for all U9-U23 games.
  • Implementing and coordinating screening and prehabilitation programmes for all players.
  • Acting as line manager to the Academy Physiotherapists.
  • Liaising with the First Team Head Physiotherapist, Head of Medical and Sporting Director, assisting where required.
  • Ensuring all cardiac screening takes place in line with EPPP guidelines.
  • Ensuring all players graduating from the Academy have a complete Medical Player Performance Record as required by the EPPP guidelines.
  • Creating and coordinating an effective CPD programme for academy medical staff.
  • Working with the Head of Academy Sports Science to implement effective testing in age appropriate medical and physical screening, anthropometric assessments, physiological and fitness testing, movement and posture/functioning screening, and predictive maturation measurement.
  • Ensuring the management of injuries effectively meets the Club’s commitment to players, coaches and senior management through clinical audit and accurate documentation.

Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Post graduate qualification in Sports Physiotherapy.
  • Chartered physiotherapist.
  • HCPC registered.
  • ATMMiF qualification.
  • Experience in working with young elite athletes, creating and managing programmes to facilitate their long term athletic development.
  • Experience in leading and managing a medical department.
  • IT skills to include a high level of competence using Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint.
  • Full, clean driving licence is desirable.
