We are seeking Trainee Advanced Nurse Practitioner to work within our community mental health teams supporting our consultant psychiatrists within outpatient clinics., We are seeking someone with a good understanding of an Advanced Nurse Practitioner role and the requirements before qualifying.

You’ll be expected to:

Demonstrate ongoing evidence of learning of capability at Masters Level across the 38 standards within the four pillars of Advanced Practice outlined in the Multi Professional Framework for Advanced Practice (Clinical practice, Leadership and Management, Education, Research)

Practise in compliance with your respective Code of Professional Conduct and within your scope of practice. Being responsible and accountable for decisions, actions and omissions at this level of practice

Demonstrate a critical understanding of your broadened level of responsibility and autonomy and the limits of own competence and professional scope of practice, including when working with complexity, risk, uncertainty and incomplete information

Act on professional judgement about when to seek help, demonstrating critical reflection on own practice, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and openness to chang

Under supervision assume responsibility for the daily management of the clinical areas to which on qualifying you will have responsibility for, * Working under supervision; Practice as a trainee ANP using collaborative and independent judgment to assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement, manage, and evaluate care for patients. The level of supervision will be dependent on the stage of training.

  • Under appropriate level of supervision to plan and manage complete episodes of care. This will be working in collaboration with senior medical colleagues and others when required. Delegating and referring as appropriate, to ensure timely, effective management to optimise health outcomes, in line with the evidence base and nationally recognised best practice.

  • Work collaboratively with the multi disciplinary team to achieve the education; leadership and research pillars.

  • Under appropriate levels of supervision, be responsible for the rapid assessment, diagnostics, and treatment of individuals within the Mental Health Community Service using an advanced level of professional accountability, autonomy, and judgement, underpinned by relevant experience. This includes highly complex decision-making across a broad range of differentiated and undifferentiated individual presentations and complex situations, synthesising information from multiple sources to make appropriate, evidence-based judgements and/or diagnoses

  • Under supervision work in partnership with individuals, families and carers, using a range of assessment methods as appropriate (e.g. of history-taking; holistic assessment; identifying risk factors; mental health assessments; requesting, undertaking and/or interpreting diagnostic tests; and conducting health needs assessments, physical examination, clinical measurements using advanced clinical skills, detailed medicines history, undertaking and interpreting range of tests / investigations

  • Use knowledge, expertise and decision-making skills to inform clinical reasoning approaches when dealing with differentiated and undifferentiated individual presentations and complex situations, synthesising information from multiple sources to make appropriate, evidence-based judgements and/or diagnoses

  • Under supervision initiate, evaluate and modify a range of interventions which may include therapies life style advice, if appropriate independently prescribing medicines. Or administering medicines using a Patient group Direction in accordance with Trust regulations, as agreed at department and directorate level, to caseload within Community Mental Health service based on efficacy, safety, and cost

  • Exercise professional judgement to assess and manage risk appropriately, where there may be complex and unpredictable events and provide the required support to teams to ensure safety of individuals, families and carers

  • Engage with, appraise and respond to individuals’ motivation, development stage and capacity, working collaboratively to support health literacy and empower individuals to participate in decisions about their care and to maximise their health and well-being

  • Work collaboratively with an appropriate range of multi-agency and inter-professional resources, developing, maintaining and evaluating links to manage risk and issues across organisations and settings

  • Act as a clinical role model/advocate for developing and delivering care that is responsive to changing requirements, informed by an understanding of local population health needs, agencies and networks

  • Demonstrate the underpinning subject-specific competencies i.e. knowledge, skills and behaviours relevant to the role setting and scope, and demonstrate application of the capabilities to these, in an approach that is appropriate to the individual role, setting and scope

Full expert supervision and support will be offered during the training phase as well as on qualifying following the successful completion of the MSc in Advanced Practice (Mental health).

The Advanced nurse practitioner is a nationally recognised role, and these posts offer an exciting opportunity for senior nurses with significant mental health experience to develop their skills further. These posts are full time clinical posts. Part time working is not possible during the training period (1-3 years depending on previous academic qualifications), but once trained consideration to flexible working can be made.

Following successful completion of the MSc in Advanced Practice, which is expected to take 1-3 years depending on previous educational attainment. The successful candidate will progress to a Band 8a., * Membership of relevant Professional Body – Registered Mental Health Nurse

  • Non-Medical prescribing course, Relevant Master’s Degree in Advanced Clinical Practice, Teaching qualification or equivalent experience

  • Proven leadership and management experience with Community Mental Health

£43,742 – £57,349 a year – Permanent, Full-time,
